Some people don't like animals, could be allergic, are just poor care takers, aren't allowed to have pets, etc.

If none of those things are true, I believe a pet would be a good idea. They can be incredibly therapeutic just to be around, being needed by an animal that loves you unconditionally gives you warm fuzzy feelings, and having a dog that needs to be taken to parks where other dog owners are walking around is a good way to start socializing if the OP can get some kind of therapy going. Many of these dog owners are even real women!

Obviously jumping straight from literally talking to a cardboard cutout to beautiful girlfriend falling into the OP's lap is not going to happen. I have social anxiety myself, and it's an uphill battle that it's nice to have any kind of friend for, even if it is furry and can't talk to you. A pet is a major improvement on coming home to a sheet of dead tree shaped like Selena Gomez.

Dogs are a shitton of work, so it depends on the OP's lifestyle and then he'd have to research breeds. (or she, OP didn't specify.)

Yes, that's true. So, after that there's volunteering at an animal shelter, perhaps. S/he would get the human contact and benefits of spending time with animals, and would still get to walk dogs/take them to parks, etc.

Several shelters where I live are looking for "cat cuddlers". That is apparently a thing.

Good suggestion. Since OP is single, a dog in particular might not be a good bet unless it's an adult being fostered by a rescue organization, so they can get an honest assessment of whether it can be left alone when their schedule demands.

As someone else who has social issues, I love volunteering - you don't have the sense that your 'goal' in doing this is to MAKE FRIENDS DAMMIT, so you're more relaxed and, subsequently, approachable.

A relationship with an actual live human being is also a shitton of work. A dog could be a rehearsal, with the added benefit that unlike a cardboard cut-out, it really is glad to see you.
