White Washing-Torn

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
There's a miniseries coming out in Canada later this year that is based on a book series that I enjoy. They announced the casting recently, and I don't know how to feel about it. One of the characters, which is half werefolf/half 'Kitsune', so he has Japanese features, was cast with a light haired white actor. The African American werewolf (Who dies in the book before we really get to know him, I guess they changed that?) was given an African American girlfriend who isn't in the book-Which is great! But I'm still a bit put off by the casting of the other character.

not canadian so i don't know what series you're talking about...

but that sounds really stupid to me. the whitewashing doesn't even make sense.

the tanuki is a japanese mythical animal, why the hell would you get a non-japanese actor to play him? that's just STUPID.

Well, his father was white and his mother was Japanese (A kitsunegiri). He has almond eyes with black hair, and high cheekbones. The actor they got...well, you decide.

Character is Jeremy Danvers.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so! And yep! Bitten will be out later this fall. :)

I'm kind of wondering if Logon will play a bigger part in this, since they gave him a girlfriend.

Edit-Here's a better picture of him

Was there someone who fit the book description who was capable, available and willing? Or did they pick the most capable of the available and willing actors regardless of looks?

I've never seen him act, so unsure. I've heard Elena's actress was really wooden on the last how she worked on. :X

It's probably one of those things we can never know. There are a lot of politics behind casting long before anyone even auditions, but usually casting directors cast parts based more on the performer's ability to portray the role than what they look like. They don't always do it, but you can usually tell just by watching if someone was cast based on looks instead of ability.

It's possible that they couldn't find anyone interested in the role who had features that match [though idk if I'd really say the actor they did cast was 'light-haired' since he seems to be a brunette]. If there was someone who did and was interested then...yeah. Shitty casting.

Also, just to put this out there, it is possible to be half-White, and half-Asian and look entirely white - blonde hair, blue eyes white even. That doesn't really make the casting any better, but it might make it a little less jarring to watch if you go with that?

Avoid If You're Triggered By Sorta Rape

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it'll be in the show, but there is a scene in the book where Elena is tied up, fondled, and her future mate tells her he won't finish if she just says 'no'. She doesn't, just glares at him, and he has sex with her. Some people have found this to be a bit rape-y, though the point was supposed to be Elena does want Clay, she's just too stubborn to ever admit it to him. (For good reasons)

...If she's obviously not willing/there is no enthusiastic consent [and glaring at someone/doing anything but either saying 'Yes, I want to' or being very into it isn't enthusiastic consent] it's rape. So that isn't 'sorta rape-y' it *is* rape.

Even if the person whose raped 'wants' their rapist, if they don't want sex then and there, and it shows [which it does here] then it's rape.

Her monologue says she wants it, she just won't admit it to him.

OT but I keep reading the comment title as "Whitewashing TRON."
