That might be it, honestly.

I mean, I'm not in the same boat as OP by any means, but there's something nice about shows like Azumanga Daioh where it focuses on friendship and school events, not "omg who's going to ask me to the prom?" I know that's not what all American high school is like, and that there can be dating/relationship worries in Japanese series, but there is a different dynamic.
