I see your point, and totally understand your reaction. I must admit that's not my read of Taeko's decision at all.

I feel like the movie's resolution comes when she seizes her future for herself, and that's the lesson to be learned. It's nice that she gets a boyfriend out of the deal, but the point is not that what she needed all along was a boyfriend, but rather that life is full of second and third chances, if you're daring enough to take them.

I do like this take and can certainly see how it feeds into the movie. I guess for me it's harder to accept it because we don't really know anything about Taeko's current life, like how and why she ended up at the job she has or why exactly she never found a long term relationship. I enjoyed the movie but it was a bit frustrating for me how they centered so much around her life when she was very young. I was expecting it to give scenes of her life throughout her years instead of just her elementary years. I would have liked it better had it elaborated more why she was unhappy with her current lifestyle.
