I agree with you there on Jack. Actually in his first return to DW, near the end of season 3 he didn't jar too much, because those last two episodes were dark enough, and the issues of the Doctor's aversion to him managed to cover most of the problems of Jack being too light after season 1 TW.

It's when he comes back in the final double episode of season 4 DW that really jars badly. After how dark season 2 TW was - losing Owen and Tosh, Jack having to put his own brother in deep freeze after being trapped for a thousand (two?) years... just no. He was too light in DW.

His moping in The End Of Time however was not so jarring, since after Children of Earth he'd have to be broody.
