I know you're going to get a lot of flack about liking this show and how it humiliate geeks and nerds more than respecting them (and in some cases, I agree)- but I understand your feelings. For the longest time I didn't have anyone around me that shared my nerdier passions and I always wanted friends that I could share my interests with.

So, no, not all that pathetic.

This is... oddly sweet, albeit I'm not sure if it's healthy (I do this to my favourite writers, mind you).

Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian had something of a similar effect on me. I was all like: "OMG this is a show about LITERATURE woah now I can die content".

But I hope you find somebody as geeky as yourself!

(these are not pieces of fiction themselves that are problematic, it is the reasons you like them. Say, if you like The Great Dictator because you unironically love Hitler... it says something about you and your understanding of the way the story is told. If you like it because of Charlie Chaplin? Another thing entirely).

Can someone tell me why this show gets so much flack nowadays? I still think it's a lot of fun but everyone recently seems to hate it and I just don't know why.

Because the characters have enormous personality flaws that are almost unilaterally lampshaded in-universe and are in no wise intended to be viewed as positive personality traits, but a large percentage of viewers missed the memo and firmly believe that you're supposed to think the characters are perfect and flawless.

It annoys me because I want them to stop acting like girl geeks are unicorns. It's nice that they have nerdy girls, Bernadette and Amy are cool, but they all act like liking the boy's geeky stuff is lame. The only time I enjoyed the girls and geekiness was when they were all reading comic books and trying to figure out if you anyone else could hold Thor's hammer. Otherwise, it's all "oh my, there's a GIRL in the comic book store!" or "Sweetie, no girl plays D&D!" Fuck that noise.

Agreed. I love BBT but hate this aspect of it - girl geeks are nowhere near rare. Even if it was a local issue (not a very nerdy town, most are male, it DOES happen) the male characters have traveled to cons and such, they go on the internet, and should damn well know the geek scene is hardly gender exclusive.

The writers have no excuse. How hard would it be to show the girls more interested in these things? Would it magically change their femininity? Are they not allowed because they're all thin and pretty? (oh and can THAT joke die? not every single female geek is "fat and ugly"... and even if they are, why are they held at that standard when male geeks are allowed to be all types? come on, writers. get your shit together)

I laugh myself and then later I think, ouch, or sometimes I just don't find it funny. In the show it's okay for women to be scientists, but they aren't fandom/media geeks--even Amy has never read a comic book (and of the cast of women, you'd think she had). Penny says for the first time in history, a woman (her) will play D&D, etc. All of that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Women can't be media geeks on their show--Penny can't even understand the appeal of Buffy when she watches that show to make Leonard happy.

It's why I love SPN's Charlie so much: she's a positive geek portrayal--she's nice, she's brave, she's geeky, she's a lesbian, she LARPs, she has social skills (admittedly flirting w/men isn't one of them ;) ), she's awesome. She's not even trying to get between the guys (she's lesbian--she even gets to kiss another woman on screen!). I don't get the fandom hate for her--oh, NO, I'm not asking for an explanation, I've seen their "reasons"--I don't care, so don't try to explain it to me. Contrast her w/Penny, Bernadette, or Amy.....yeah, they lose, which is awful since BBT is all about the geeks and science and the media (fandom, etc.) but we can't have a Charlie (even excluding the lesbian part) on the show.

And people totally buy Leonard's Nice Guy to Penny (and he even admits he's Nice Guying her) as him being genuinely nice (not) and Penny owes him. It's the fans buying unironically into the show and thinking they're good role models/this is how geek really behave irl that makes me cringe.

Re: social skills: I kinda wish that wasn't considered a requirement for a positive portrayal of a female geek. I mean, a lot of us don't have great social skills, and that's not a terrible thing (as long as we don't have the kind of poor social skills that translate into not caring if we hurt people - which is not the same as not recognizing.) I'd love to see a female character who was geeky, intelligent, a good person, and awkward, and not have that be portrayed as a flaw.

Not really geeky but I think Felicity from Arrow falls into the category of nice nerdy girl who has chronic foot-in-mouth syndrome and is a good person(at least as far as episode 12 has told me, maybe she does a 180 later on or something?). I honestly love her to bits and she's easily one of my favourite lady characters on TV atm.

Raj's girlfriend has social anxiety and so far it's been treated fairly realistically. Problem is the lack of social skills means it's complicated for her to be a regular character - how can you have a consistent working character who can't socialize with anyone? How would that work and remain entertaining and productive? It may be realistic but it's like making an anti-social character... if they never interact with anyone you can't get much out of them.

Haha yes, I can relate to him a lot. I love how natural his 'geek' personality is and that they all tease one another. There's no ostracizing there like it's often portrayed in BBT.

From what I've seen of this show, it's like it was written by people who haven't noticed that the concept and culture of "geekiness" has changed in the past 30 years. This includes the "lol geek girls are unicorns" thing that someone else mentioned.

Also, it uses its laugh track to fill silences instead of follow funny things. "My computer came with Windows 7" is not a fucking joke.

The way I see it, the problem with it is that the premise of the show seems to be "Look at these losers! Isn't it funny how nerdy they are? Look at their ridiculous hobbies! Isn't that silly?"

The jokes might be funny, but not a single one of the "smart" or "geeky" jokes is supposed to be funny on its own. We are not supposed to laugh at joke, we are supposed to laugh at the fact that they MADE the joke in the first place. I understand that the show wouldn't be reachable if it were nothing but physics jokes, but it pisses me off that TBBT can't seem to be funny without mockery.

To me, the Big Bang Theory, while full of geeky jokes, is less about geeks being humorous and more about humor at the expense of geeks.

also I want to slap Leonard in the face every time he appears on the screen, yet somehow he is supposed to be the ~hero~ or some shit? I seriously cannot with that dude.

This is my problem with it, too. It's like they took the nerd stereotype from the 90s and multiplied it. Very "oh aren't the geeks cute in their abnormalness" rather than actually laughing at it from the inside.
