Most of my fandoms are tiny or outright nonexistent, so I know how you feel.

(If there's one fandom in particular -- maybe the one you searched for in the image -- that you're into, perhaps you can mention it and see if there's any more fans around?)

If you're not already involved with tiny fandom activities like ([community profile] yuletide or [profile] rarewomen, hop on. Every year Yuletide does a "promotion post" a week or two before nominations open where you can extoll the wonders of beloved tiny fandoms, give links to source materials, and heck, sometimes even seduce new writers into checking them out and offering to write 'em.

Oh yes, I'm really into Yuletide! Been doing it for several years now, and I keep a little textfile where I write down my potential nominations whenever I'm reminded of an old love or stumble upon something new (said file already has about twenty fandoms listed, and we're just in May -_-b).

Oh, thank you for reminding me! I'm thrilled about signing up for Yuletide. (...but it's about four months away :/)

Let me weep with you, OP. Sometimes I feel so awfully sad when I look at all these small fandoms of mine and realize that they're never going to grow, never. I look at how the canon source, an obscure piece of something obscure, becomes more and more distant; grows more outdated, more forgotten. How its creators die one after another (if they're still alive, that is).

Our only hope is a new piece of media related to the original, I suppose. Something like The Hobbit or all the new Sherlock Holmes series/films.

jennifer's body has 23 stories on Ao3, so don't expect any sympathy from me. :) You've got a lot more than me.

God I loved Jennifer's Body. Thank you for letting me know what I'll be watching tonight.

Murder Rooms, 13 stories, of which 12 are written by me. I still sympathize with you, though :(

I haven't seen much bashing, only one or two incidences really, but I know how you feel. I wish the series for my fandom would get shown on TV again and the fandom would explode. I would love for it to become a huge crazy fandom. Even if that never happens I refuse to let it die.

To me it feels like you may be lucky enough to find a small fandom where a) people are welcoming, b) the small number of people in it are at least regularly active in talking about it, or c) the people in it actually want fic/write fic (which I often kinda need in a fandom); but you will rarely find more than one of those qualities. And it's sad. I also find myself feeling that during this period of LJ's death/people migrating to Tumblr or trying to get people interested in DW, the weird fandom limbo right now is really hard on small fandoms cause everybody's too scattered in different places.

the limbo that's happening because people can't find their fandom of choice is definitely taking a toll. For example I would neeever have predicted that Hannibal's fandom would be tumblr-based; if I hadn't just started using tumblr a couple weeks before I started watching Hannibal (to chase another randomly-tumblr-centric fandom, Vikings) I probably would still be thinking there wasn't a fandom at all.

I know how you feel; I want to talk Bleak House with people, but the possibility of a really long Dickens book (with a fantastic miniseries, but still) getting more fandom is slim.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hey! I have only just finished watching part 1 of the Bleak House miniseries (the BBC one with Gillian Anderson) this very evening. But I have not read the books, and alas, since I've only finished part 1, I don't know enough about anything to say anything interesting.

Still, on the positive side, there's always the hope of new fans! :)

AO3 has two works in my favorite fandom. I'm at the point where I'd be happy to see bashing because then at least I'd know other people are paying attention to the source material.

I am desperately curious about this fandom now D: I hate secrets like these, I MUST KNOW what they're about!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, that sucks. :( Nothing worse than loving something and not having anyone to talk to about it.

My last fandom wasn't very big but I was really lucky because there was always TONS of discussion/meta, the fandom was kind of bitty but also had a very solid central place, a decent amount of fic (a few hundred, though the quality of it left something to be desired. I find it's often the case small fandoms is almost entirely fantastic or almost entirely terrible) and was pretty active in general. The cast were also super friendly and interactive with us. The best fandom I've been in by MILES. It's more or less dead now but I got 3 years damn good years out of it and I look back with highly fond memories of awesome people. /unrelated ramble, sorry.

jesus, terrible English there *it's often the case in small fandoms that fic is

DW, Anon. You're (however sadly) not alone.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
AO3 is shit for small fandoms. In this aspect I'd advise you to check ff.net; without it my tiny game fandom probably wouldn't exist, and it remains intermittently active (also the fic is great). It depends on the source material and the kind of fans it'd attract, but it may just be it's so old that AO3 wasn't around when there was some activity in it, and people stuck to services that were around back then.

Try DA (it may take some digging around) and tumblr. Tumblr specially could be good if there's really nothing else for the fandom; there's no bar! you get free range in what you can post as fanworks.

I like Korean dramas. ><' good luck finding anything there a';lkfg'lkglkdfhg

Hairspray was a great fandom for a while. Small, so your fics didn't get lost in an avalanche, but active and enthusiastic with some good quality stuff. Never in y life have I received so many reviews for short fics. ㅜㅜ

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
at least you're not dealing with a fake flood :<

the startgate universe fandom was a ghost town until valentine's day last year. then everyone and their 13 year old sister decided once upon a time's rumbelle was the shit and what better way to show their love for this pairing than to not write about it at all half the time. instead they all decided to ship belle with every character robert carlyle has ever played (including one he has stated was gay).

this has lead to the sgu fics exploding from about 77 to nearly 400 but almost all of them are about belle, written by people who have barely or never seen the show

I feel your pain, anon.
