If we're going to talk about the finale, can someone please explain what The Great Intelligence's beef with the Doctor was?

He was just mad that the Doctor wrecked all his plans. That's why he made a long boring monologue (that, sadly, no one felt like interrupting) to explain that he was going to make him suffer in all his incarnations.

I've seen some of Classic Who, but not all of it. Did The Great Intelligence exist in Classic Who and did the Doctor foil his plans then?

Or is this just having to do with The Snowmen and The Bells of St. John?

I know The Great Intelligence existed in Classic Who but I haven't seen the episodes where he appears (I think it was with the second Doctor).

I don't know the name of the first Great Intelligence serial, but 'Web Of Fear' is what I think the second serial is called. First one with Lethbridge-Stewart!

I can recall the title, but virtually nothing else; one of Three's early episodes, yes?

It was in classic!Who, way back in the Second Doctor. The first time the Doctor, with Jamie and Victoria (I think?) landed in Tibet and foiled a plan to invade Earth with robot yeti.

The second time, it was in London, and again, the Great Intelligence tried to invade with robot yeti.

There was also a side story called "DownTime" where it tried again and was foiled by Sarah Jane, Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, and his daughter Kate. The Great Intelligence had manipulated Victoria (yes, the one who used to be the Second Doctor's companion) into helping it.

I think that's one of the failing points of this particular finale. The G.I. as delivered in this episode has all the charisma and menace of wet tissue. It was such a background player in Snowmen and Bells of Saint John that I don't really have a good feel for why it would want to commit a crime of history rewrite/suicide.

Maybe because it didn't know just how much the Doctor has saved the universe outside his foiling it's own plots and a few vague stories from other races that fail to go into detail of what they were doing that he foiled (e.g. destroying the universe).
