Re: Can this into a thread where we complain about the finale then?

I sort of like the set up. I like someone's idea that John Hurt is the final Doctor and then Ten and Eleven have to team up to destroy him, and essentially the Doctor will have to move forward knowing that he goes Dark Side and will be defeated by his past selves. But honestly, based on the dialogue I'm pretty sure John Hurt is the Doctor that ended the Time War, so there goes that.

Overall I liked the set-up, for the 50th, but that's really what the episode felt like for me: a set-up, not a finale. Like the Utopia or Turn Left.

IDK, I don't really love the Vastra/Jenny/Strax gang, so their appearances were just okay for me. I find it hard to get excited with them like I used to for Donna, Martha, Rose, Mickey, Harriet, Jack, or even Churchill reappearing. And I think a large part of the enjoyability of the first half of the episode depends on whether or not you're a fan of them/River.

One thing that confused me that I'd love to see clarified here. River's "grave" was a secret entrance to the TARDIS, and Clara started to remember stuff about JttCotT while she running through because of TARDIS warpy powers, right? But then suddenly they pop out in front of the TARDIS doors with the others surrounded by Whispermen (and they didn't even try to think of an ambush plan?). So were they or weren't they in the TARDIS? And if they weren't what were they running through that was important enough to warrant a secret entrance and why did Clara start remembering things?

If the setup isn't a time war Doctor then I might be okay with it, but everything I've been seeing is pointing to John Hurt possible being like a 8.5 and I'm just not loving the idea. I may change my mind but for now I'm a bit bitter that we're most likely not getting 8 or 9 for the anniversary if this is the plot.

And I think that's where they lost me, series 6 ruined River for me and I consider the gang okay but I'm not invested in them in the slightest.

And I like Clara, but it seemed really fast to give her that level of importance. I was also a little irked at the classic who retcon, as fun as it was to see the clips of old Doctors it also seemed to disrespect the old series in a way.

Yeah, I was all ~squee~ at the Classic Who stuff, because eh -- it's time travel. So there's a bunch of Claras running around. Whatever. Not the weirdest thing going on probably. And I thought, she mentioned that she didn't usually get through to any incarnation until she ran into Eleven. But I didn't like the one bit with One where Clara suggests the TARDIS. That...didn't that directly contradict The Doctor's Wife?

Not to mention it's sooooo self-indulgent. Like, 14-year-old-self-insert-fanfic self-indulgent. But at the same time, the self-indulgence was so OTT it made me kind of grin, because it was like, oh Moffat, you so totally wrote fanfic of this when you were a teenager didn't you? And you must have been squeeing about getting your hands on the show and getting to make it canon all this time, weren't you? :D

I'll be a tad disappointed if John Hurt turns out to be Real!Nine, though, because the idea of Nine regenerating from Eight, and of Eight developing from dancing around San Francisco smooching Grace and squeeing over the fact that his shoes fit perfectly, to fighting in the Time War and murdering all the Time Lords and Daleks at the end and regenerating into someone like Nine has always been one of my favorite arcs of all the incarnations (especially with the various things from the audios and novels in between), even though it's mostly in my head. Which is a bit of a conceit of mine, I suppose, since lol, I don't actually KNOW anything, but I'm still not keen on the idea that the Doctor went through a whole regeneration offscreen. Some things should be left open and simple, IMO.

I kinda assumed he was the Valeyard at first, since the timestream in the cave was the timestream of future!Doctor, which could totally be Thirteen. But I guess that's not what most people thought?

I thought Hurt had to be the Valeyard.

I also thought before the line from Eleven about him that he is obviously one of Eleven's future selves.
