Re: Hairstyle Advice

I don't know if our hair textures are at all similar, since "frizzy" and "curly" can encompass a pretty wide range, but I do the following to embrace my curl while minimizing frizz:

1) I get my hair cut with layers so it doesn't turn into a fluffy triangle. Surprisingly, going to fancy salons is no guarantee of a better curly cut, in my experience. It's more a matter of being firm about what you want. I got the best curly hair cut of my life at a Great Clips after trying out a lot of more expensive stylists who clearly did not know wtf to do with curly hair.

2) Minimal use of shampoo - if my scalp is itchy, I will massage in a small amount of anti-dandruff shampoo right on that part of the scalp, then rinse right away. Otherwise, no shampoo. If my hair is actually looking greasy, I will use a small mount of baby shampoo.

3) Lots of conditioner - whether I used shampoo or not. I will shampoo (if necessary) and condition my hair as soon as I step in the shower, then put my hair up with a clip so I can leave the conditioner on as long as possible. I don't rinse it out until just before I step out of the shower.

4) After towel-drying, I put in some leave-in moisturizer.

5) Finally, I either let it air-dry (preferable) or blow-dry it with a diffuser.

That's not a style, no, but with a good haircut, I think naturally curly hair looks lovely.

+1 to everything about this comment. Also, the link another anon posted a couple of comments down, to naturallycurly.com, is a great resource for taming the frizz and bringing out the shape of your curls. The key thing to remember is shampoo as little as possible, and not to brush your hair - that breaks up the natural curl and leads to more frizz. Finger-comb using conditioner instead; that will allow you to detangle without breaking the curl.

As for haircuts, I have wavy/curly hair (depends on its mood) and I've worn it as long as hitting the top of my bum, to as short as above the shoulders. It's a matter of getting the right cut. Layers and shape are important to make sure your hair doesn't floof out into a mushroom (I had that exact same problem when I was thirteen, but at the same length now, my hair looks really nice because the cut and the way I care for it are different). If you want to play it safe, I find the best length is one that hits somewhere around your shoulder blades.

And styles... well, it depends on the length of your hair. When I had longer hair, I liked to put it up just because the weather around here's really hot. Sometimes it was a simple ponytail with a hair-tie; sometimes I used a banana clip or a butterfly clip, which are great ways to add embellishment to your hair. I also occasionally used a chopstick to pull my hair into a bun. And speaking of buns, that's a quick and easy option to get your hair out of the way. Also, with both buns and ponytails, pulling them to the side instead of dead-centre at the back can jazz up the look in an instant - just make sure it looks great from all angles. You might have to play with how far forward etc you can pull it, to find a look that flatters you.

As of a month ago, my hair's too short to do any of the above, so I've recently turned to hairbands to add visual interest. They're something you could certainly try as well, for days you don't feel like doing anything with your hair, but just want to pep it up a bit.

Hope some of this helps! =D
