Re: Questions about alcohol
1. Are there any sweet alcoholic drinks?
Many cocktails are juice or soda based. There are some like the Mai Tai that even have fruit on them, and you barely taste the alcohol, overpowered by the sugar. My personal recomendation for begginers is a Strawberry Daiquiri.
2. What is Jagermeister--whiskey? Vodka, etc? Or does it fall into its own category?
Jager is an herbal liquor, and that's a category of its own. Herbal liquors are technically meant to help digestion, but a lot of young people approach distillates via Jager, because they're not as strong as other classics.
3. Why do so many people like vodka? Is it that good?
Vodka has a number of positive qualities when it comes to boozing. I can't talk about prices (I'm not from the US, and I don't know if you are anyway), but there's a thing: The darker a liquor is, the more impurities it has. Those "impurities" give them flavor (wood/apple with whiskey, for example, sugar with rum), but they're one of the causes of hangovers. Vodka is also popular because since it tastes like alcohol and nothing else, you can mix it with pretty much anything. And because it can get you drunk real fast for cheap if you're not a seasoned boozer (and most young people are not buying high tier-vodka for the taste, let's be real).
4. Do you drink vodka straight or mix stuff with it?
Depending on the mood, I enjoy doing high-tier vodka shots, Russian!style (with toasting and nibbling on pickled veggies on rye bread). Cheap vodka burns and is sort of gross and oily. On the other hand, vodka of any quality can be mixed with fruit juice to obtain something drinkable. (I still like to shell out a little bit more if I can because trust me, quality can do a lot for a drink). My favorite mixes are the always-popular Screwdriver (with orange juice), and vodka/tonic (specially if it is vanilla vodka).
5. What counts as "liquor" vs not liquor?/What's the difference?
Alcohol is essentialy a kind of sugar/water mix. There are two ways to obtain alcohol: Via fermentation, and via distillation. The first is easier to do, and you'll have drinks with a strong and complex flavour resembling its fruit/grain of origin, but with a weak alcohol content (think wine and beer). The second one will yield something with a subtler, layered flavour that may not resemble anything you've tasted before, and with a strong alcohol content and taste.
6. Does all alcohol burn your throat?
Not at all. Stronger alcohol may burn a little, and the cheapest alcohol will always burn worse. And of course, a rookie drinker will feel the burn if they start with the strong stuff (worse if they make the mistake of not mix it).
7. Are most drinks carbonated?
Actually the only carbonated ones I can remember are beer, and in a lesser way, cider. Oh, and champagne, of course.
