Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)1. Are there any sweet alcoholic drinks?
2. What is Jagermeister--whiskey? Vodka, etc? Or does it fall into its own category?
3. Why do so many people like vodka? Is it that good?
4. Do you drink vodka straight or mix stuff with it?
5. What counts as "liquor" vs not liquor?/What's the difference?
6. Does all alcohol burn your throat?
7. Are most drinks carbonated?
Sorry for the nerdy numbered list haha!
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)2. Neither. It's a liqueur you're supposed to have after eating (a large meal), and it's supposed to make digestion easier. Technically. It's strong, but not stronger than other liqueurs (35%).
4. You can do both. But many people just drink vodka with something else.
5. It depends on where you are and in which context you're using the word. A liquor is alcohol, obtained with distillation and containing ethanol. Wine is not a liquor, since it's pressed graped in barrels. Vodka and tequila are. Careful: a liquor and a liqueur are not the same: a liqueur has added sugar in it (Jagermeister is a liqueur)
6. When you're not used to the taste, many of them do (I'm still not used to it). But less alcoholic drinks don't: wine, beer... Anything less than 20%. Vodka is 40%. Rum
7. No.
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)Rum is 50% in some places.
To clarify, the people I know who mix vodka with something else do because they can have a larger drink without as much alcohol in it as the equal amount of liquid with only vodka. Vodka is rather strong and mixing it with juice softens it.
If you ever drink punch, be careful: you don't taste the alcohol at all, or mostly not, and you get tipsy really fast, especially on an empty stomach.
Re: Questions about alcohol
1. It depends on your definition of "sweet". But yes, there are many that could be considered very sweet -- Baileys, Kahlúa, Dooley's, etc. This type of booze is usually called crème liqueur.
2. Jägermeister is a Kräuterlikör (herb liqueur). Another famous one of this type is the Gammel Dansk.
6. See question one! Most of those won't burn your throat, but I suppose it also depends on how sensitive/unused you are to alcohol.
7. Only the ones containing soda and such. Most drinks I enjoy aren't carbonated -- such as Rusty Nail, my favorite.
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)2 - I don't actually know, but I'm not fond of it.
3 - I think really good vodka is not supposed to have any taste other than alcohol, so I don't know. It adds alcohol to mixed drinks without overpowering the other flavors. I think people like it because it has a high alcohol content and therefore can get you drunk really fast.
4 - both.
5 - "liquor" tends to refer to hard liquor, like vodka, whiskey, etc. This is as opposed to things like beer and wine that are carbonated.
6 - no.
7 - Some are, some aren't, I don't know about "most." You can add carbonated liquids to non-carbonated liquor to make a carbonated cocktail.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)1. If you're meaning mixed drinks, there's loads. If you're meaning straight out of the bottle, that's not as many. Some wines are, some other alcohol is. My personal kryptonite is sour apple schnapps, but when I say that in mixed company, I usually get weird looks. If you're curious, you can find sweeter stuff in the "cordial" or "dessert" areas of the wine section in your grocery store.
2. Jagermeister is gross. It tastes like black licorice and it's gross. :(
3/4. People like vodka cause it's kind of an easy way to move into drinking the harder stuff, I think. It's also usually present in a home bar since a ton of mixed stuff has vodka. I don't drink vodka straight.
5. If you're in some states, beer and wine are not liquor and everything else is. Dunno if that's the "real" definition or not.
6. All alcohol, as far as I've experienced, has a burn. Each has a different kind of burn, though, so if one is too burny for you, try another. It goes from DEAR SWEET JESUS MY THROAT IS DYING to a very pleasant, warm feeling. I prefer the latter.
7. No, but the ones that are are pretty fun. I'm not a big champagne fan, but even within champagne there's a lot of different varieties, some of which I love. Alcohol is weird! Once you get older, if you have a larger chain alcohol shop in the area that's known for answering questions, just go in there and find someone that looks friendly and start asking. Tell them you're just wanting to learn more so maybe they won't try to shove a $25 bottle of Kahlua in your hands.
Have fun, and be safe! :)
Re: Questions about alcohol
1. Tons - but mostly due to added flavoring or mixings.
3. I like it because I don't think it adds a super distinctive taste when it's mixed with juice, soda, etc, the way rum and tequila do.
4. I've only had it straight when it was flavored, and then I still preferred to add some club soda because it's pretty strong.
7. Only if you add soda, or it's a hard cider or something. Sparkling wine. Most cocktails with vodka etc are not.
I like lists :)
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)3. Neat, it smells like paint stripper. But it has a high alcohol content and it goes well with mixers - assuming you don't put a metric fuckton of vodka in, in which case your mixed drink will taste like paint stripper. (I have never drunk paint stripper.)
4. See previous. Mind you, I think my grandfather drank it neat, but he was Ukrainian. And not an alcoholic, before you ask.
6. No. Tell the person who told you that that you're not meant to drink one of those cocktails you light on fire while it's still burning.
7. No. And personally I think wine is underrated.
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)7. Sometimes I hear that people add carbonated water to their wine and... Well, to each their own and all that.
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)There is also a sweet version with lemonade instead of water which I prefer. A sweet Weinschorle is the only way you'll get me to drink wine.
* Everyone I know drinks Weinschorlen with white wine, but you can get them with red wine too.
Re: Questions about alcohol
Oh god, another curious weirdo who can't leave well enough alone!
(The Four Loko I tried was like drinking that rubbery coating that develops on stale hard candy. I'd say I regret it, but at least now I know? :P)
Re: Questions about alcohol
OH MY GOSH, THERE'S ACTUALLY SOMETHING TO THAT, APPARENTLY. My boyfriend also confirmed it, but we always make the same weird comparisons, so I didn't know if that counted. :P
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 02:34 am (UTC)(link)Also RIP 4Loko. You were too good for this world. By which I mean terrible.
Re: Questions about alcohol
I'll bite 8D What is "Four Loko" and why haven't I tried it?
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 05:55 am (UTC)(link)Then eventually some people noticed that it was a highly alcoholic energy drink, they passed some laws, and it's not caffeinated anymore, so it's not real Four Loko. So the reason you haven't had it is because it was only American and it doesn't exist anymore sadly.
Re: Questions about alcohol
Re: Questions about alcohol
i don't think vodka has much of a flavour, but it can burn a little straight up. it's just the sting that many alcoholic drinks have. if i mix it into something it doesn't tho, at least not for me.
i know some folks have said wine doesn't burn but wines usually have a warmth to them that sits in your stomach/chest. i wouldn't say it's in the throat though, and it's not uncomfortable imo. i just wouldn't expect to drink a wine and not feel it, so if you're looking to try it, expect that.
i wouldn't drink whiskey/bourbon though. it burns which idc about but it tastes like cough syrup to me. my mom loves it but it's definitely not for everybody.
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)2. Neither, Jägermeister is a Kräuterschnaps (schnaps made out of herbs). It's like Ramazotti, if that helps you.
3. In my experience vodka is something that a lot of people can stomach. You'll find a lot of people who can't drink tequila (hits them much harder than other alcohol, makes them vomit, etc.), but most people don't have that kind of problem with vodka. Also, it's presumably tasteless/neutral, though I don't really agree with that.
4. In general or are you asking us individually? In general you can do both with it (which probably adds to it's popularity). My sister swears on vodka O(range Juice), but you can also mix it with passion fruit juice, Red Bull, coke (don't recommend that), the list goes on. Or you drink it straight. Personally, I hate mixed drinks, so I drink vodka straight.
5. I don't even know what you're asking, but that's probably because I'm ESL.
6. Depends on how strong your drink is. Beer, for example, doesn't burn down your throat, but if you drink vodka or tequila it's gonna burn going down. (Though of course it burns less/not at all depending on if you mix it with something non-alcoholic and the amount of alcohol there is in the drink.)
7. Carbonated like sparkling water and coke? No, the only drinks I now that are carbonated are beer and sparkling wine/champagne. Unless you mix it with something carbonated, then the drink is obviously carbonated as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)Jägermeister is of course not a schnaps but a liqueur. Still made of herbs, though. :)
Re: Questions about alcohol
3. I think so many people like vodka because it is very innocuous and can serve as the base for many kinds of drinks. Most people do not drink vodka straight unless it is expensive vodka.
Re: Questions about alcohol
(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)Here's what that means. When you're talking about things that aren't liquor, like beer and wine, you're talking about things that are fermented - fermented barley and wheat in the case of beer, fermented fruit in the case of wine. What's happening is that you take some sugary liquid, add some microorganisms (yeast), and end up with a liquid that has ethanol in it - drinkable alcohol. What distillation means is that you take a liquid that's been fermented, you bring it to a boil, collect it in another chamber, and cool it back down to a liquid. And because alcohol and water boil at different temperatures, the resulting liquid is going to have a much higher alcohol content and a much different flavor.
The result is that liquor has a much, much higher alcohol content - where beer might have 5 to 10% alcohol, liquor is usually going to be like 35, 40, 50% alcohol. So it's much more alcoholic, and that means it burns much more and it's not as drinkable, and you drink it in much smaller quantities and often you mix it with other things.
I think people have answered most of the other questions; the only other thing I want to say is that you totally can drink vodka straight, most people just don't because... well, if you want to drink straight liquor, you probably want something with more flavor than vodka. If you do want to drink vodka straight, make it chilled.
Re: Questions about alcohol
1. Are there any sweet alcoholic drinks?
Many cocktails are juice or soda based. There are some like the Mai Tai that even have fruit on them, and you barely taste the alcohol, overpowered by the sugar. My personal recomendation for begginers is a Strawberry Daiquiri.
2. What is Jagermeister--whiskey? Vodka, etc? Or does it fall into its own category?
Jager is an herbal liquor, and that's a category of its own. Herbal liquors are technically meant to help digestion, but a lot of young people approach distillates via Jager, because they're not as strong as other classics.
3. Why do so many people like vodka? Is it that good?
Vodka has a number of positive qualities when it comes to boozing. I can't talk about prices (I'm not from the US, and I don't know if you are anyway), but there's a thing: The darker a liquor is, the more impurities it has. Those "impurities" give them flavor (wood/apple with whiskey, for example, sugar with rum), but they're one of the causes of hangovers. Vodka is also popular because since it tastes like alcohol and nothing else, you can mix it with pretty much anything. And because it can get you drunk real fast for cheap if you're not a seasoned boozer (and most young people are not buying high tier-vodka for the taste, let's be real).
4. Do you drink vodka straight or mix stuff with it?
Depending on the mood, I enjoy doing high-tier vodka shots, Russian!style (with toasting and nibbling on pickled veggies on rye bread). Cheap vodka burns and is sort of gross and oily. On the other hand, vodka of any quality can be mixed with fruit juice to obtain something drinkable. (I still like to shell out a little bit more if I can because trust me, quality can do a lot for a drink). My favorite mixes are the always-popular Screwdriver (with orange juice), and vodka/tonic (specially if it is vanilla vodka).
5. What counts as "liquor" vs not liquor?/What's the difference?
Alcohol is essentialy a kind of sugar/water mix. There are two ways to obtain alcohol: Via fermentation, and via distillation. The first is easier to do, and you'll have drinks with a strong and complex flavour resembling its fruit/grain of origin, but with a weak alcohol content (think wine and beer). The second one will yield something with a subtler, layered flavour that may not resemble anything you've tasted before, and with a strong alcohol content and taste.
6. Does all alcohol burn your throat?
Not at all. Stronger alcohol may burn a little, and the cheapest alcohol will always burn worse. And of course, a rookie drinker will feel the burn if they start with the strong stuff (worse if they make the mistake of not mix it).
7. Are most drinks carbonated?
Actually the only carbonated ones I can remember are beer, and in a lesser way, cider. Oh, and champagne, of course.
