(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)That's not how Donna Murphy said she portrayed her.

But it's clearly a sensitive topic for you, while I was merely making a passing point. So just ignore me; if you see the character in a different way that's cool!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)Seriously? You don't think the voice actors contribute anything to their roles and how their characters are portrayed at all?
But it's clearly a sensitive topic for you, while I was merely making a passing point.
Now who's projecting?

I'm not projecting -- I was merely trying to end a pointless discussion with an anonymous poster whose arguments make no sense to me. Sorry you couldn't agree to disagree, but I'm done with this now.

Right, which is why pointing out Donna Murphy's opinion on her character was met with "it's clearly a sensitive topic for you"?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:10 am (UTC)(link)And also, no you're wrong. Not every secrete that gets posted refer to the OPs mother. Though, yes a lot do. Considering that the character is an abusive mother, that's not surprising.
I wish people who stop acting like the fact that Gothel *may* have loved Rapunzel means JACK SHIT with regards to her abuse. Even if she did love Rapunzel it wasn't enough to seriously affect her actions. She kept Rapunzel locked away in a tower for most her life - whether or not she loved her is actually a pretty minor point compared to that.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 04:42 am (UTC)(link)This. Her feelings and intentions, whatever they may have been, do not, in any way, justify what she did to Rapunzel. Cutting her off from the world and brainwashing her into fearing it so that she'd be completely dependent on Gothel is psychologically and emotionally abusive. And I wish people would stop acting like those aren't real and harmful forms of abuse, because they really fucking are, and it's very sinister because mothers, especially, can get away with that sort of bullshit and their victims have a hard time getting anybody to believe them, let alone get any sort of help for it. Which is likely why there are so many secrets comparing Gothel to people's own mothers: she's probably the first character they've come across where that behavior is actually shown to be abusive, and it's made them realize that whatever "socially acceptable" bullshit their own mothers dragged them through is also abusive.
That said, OP? You can have your interpretation of the character, and that's fine, but everybody else can also have theirs, and for a lot of people, she's a disturbingly accurate portrayal of an emotionally abusive mother, which a lot of people have. I'm happy for you that you apparently have never been through that, but it's a lot more common than most people think, hence a lot of people using Gothel to come to terms with the fact that they've been abused. Please don't take that away from them just because you think they're wrong.
