I thought it was pretty evident Gothel didn't love her at all. She loved the flower-power and the immortality and only saw Rapunzel as a (tiresome, chatty, annoyingly-mobile) vessel for the magic. She did and said whatever she thought would keep the power within her grasp, manipulating through both love and cruelty. But it was all solely to keep her own life.

I don't think many people are arguing that Gothel didn't love Rapunzel in her own way. But just because you love someone, doesn't mean you can't still be a horribly abusive parent towards them. And Gothel was damn abusive. She's not "not a saint", she is horrible.

Also, even if she's not exactly like their mother, her actions can still cause negative reactions in people who had mothers who weren't exactly like her, but who still did some very similar things.

Uhhhh most of them aren't projecting, I don't think. Pretty much everyone who's had something to say like that has said that Gothel did the same things that their mother did. Not an exaggerated version of those sorts of things. The same things.

I don't have any mother issues (my mother is awesome and we have a great relationship) and I can see that Gothel didn't love Rapunzel except for her magic hair.

Back when there were a lot more Tangled secrets I specifically watched the movie to check for this (I love the movie, so it wasn't like I went out of my way). EVERY TIME Gothel says or does something indicating love or affection towards Rapunzel, it's directed towards the hair. She's either touching Rapunzel's hair or kind of stroking the hair, or something like that. I didn't see one instance of Gothel saying "I love you" on screen that didn't involve the hair in some way.

Gothel never loved Rapunzel. Gothel loved her hair.

Yes, it all has to do with projecting. It has nothing to do with the fact that Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel as a child, forced her to live in seclusion by constantly lying to her, kept her around only because of her hair, and even bound and gagged her as a means of keeping her under control.

By the way, no mommy issues here. Maybe you're the one projecting?

I have no idea how you could watch Mother Knows Best and describe Gothel as 'no saint', rather than an evil, abusive creature, whose 'love' for Rapunzel was selfish and manipulative.
