OP, your attitude is sort of the reason why children of emotionally abusive parents have such a hard time recognizing and getting help to deal with the abuse they've been put through. Most victims of emotional abuse are told that their parents love them and have their best interests at heart, so whatever their parents do to them (short of physical abuse or neglect) is "okay" because "they really do love you!" It's really sickening, and Tangled is probably one of the first movies to actually center a plot point around the fact that using "parental love" to justify manipulation and brainwashing is actually really fucking sick and creepy and wrong. Nothing justifies what Gothel did, not even if she really did love Rapunzel. Some expressions of love are just not okay.
