I don't think many people are arguing that Gothel didn't love Rapunzel in her own way. But just because you love someone, doesn't mean you can't still be a horribly abusive parent towards them. And Gothel was damn abusive. She's not "not a saint", she is horrible.

Also, even if she's not exactly like their mother, her actions can still cause negative reactions in people who had mothers who weren't exactly like her, but who still did some very similar things.

Yeah, some parents have been known to kill their kids and themselves because no one else can love them as much as they do.
