Guest webcomic etiquette?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I know there are at least a couple webcomickers here, and I'm interested in their opinion, and the general consensus, too.

I drew a webcomic for someone, and they did use that webcomic. (What a wonderful day that was!!) It's been a year since then, and I would now like to post it to my DA, tumblr, and LJ/DW accounts.

What do you think, is this acceptable? Since it's been a year? Maybe on some sites but not others? What does everyone think?

Not a webcomic author, webcomic reader. But my opinion would be that you can put it up now, and frankly that you could've put it up a year ago when it was used as long as you linked to the webcomic you drew it for.

In fact, it kind of surprises me that you didn't.

I don't see why it would be a problem- they liked it enough to put it on their official site. A link to the source webcomic would be nice.

unless it was a time-sensitive secret/spoiler kind of thing or the webcomic artist is a super drama-prone person, there is really no reason not to post it (or to wait to post it)

The only logical reason not to, IMO, is that the author might have an issue with it, so...ask them if they've got an issue with it. If they do...well, I find that a bit odd, really, but still, asking will prevent hurt feelings and other drama in this case.

Why don't you ask the person it was a comic for?

As far as I can tell, guest comics are done partly to help promote other artists. Presumably, the author you drew it for linked back to you or credited you, which makes the comic still yours, technically. You drew it. So if I were you, I'd feel free to post it wherever I please, perhaps linking back to the comic it was drawn for in order to help promote it in your own way.

I can't really see any decent human being getting bent out of shape about that.
