Re: Cutting yourself.

Um, I resent your comment A LOT. I used to cut when I was young and it was not for the reasons you mentioned. I hated myself so much that whenever I'd feel overly anxious I'd slap/hit myself, and things escalated until one day I just grabbed a knife and cut. And it was painful and it was euphoric and I couldn't stop. I never told anyone about it until I started seeing a counselor during my second year of college.

So please refrain from commenting on things you obviously have no clue about. Sure, SOME young people probably do cut for the reasons you mentioned, but to say that all of them, or even most of them do is absolutely ridiculous.

That's not the impression I got at all.

Yeah I found it a pretty offensive attitude and comment but sadly that's how a lot of people view self injury in young people.

I'd rather not get into a discussion about it. It's a sensitive topic and no matter how many years you may have working in the field there is very little chance that I won't end up hurt by a discussion about something so personal and emotional to me. I just wanted to comment to let the other anon know they weren't alone in their reaction.

DA

I once had a doctor tell me a story about a cutter he knew. He told me she often cut for attention, and then started removing bits of the ends of her fingers and toes for attention. Finally, he said, she stabbed herself in the heart 7 times until she died. I wanted to ask him "Do you think she did that for attention?"

Hell, one of the times I tried to suicide the doctor immediately told my dad and the students following him around that because I hadn't taken all the pills in the house, so I obviously just wanted attention and wasn't really trying to kill myself. At the time, I took it as him telling me to try harder next time.

Small children stamp their foot for attention. This sort of thing is called a cry for help. It's unfortunately often ignored because people, including medical professionals, think people aren't serious. The casual way you're talking encourages this line of thinking, that most of the time it's just kids getting a bit out of hand the way kids do and nothing to really worry about.

fwiw, I found your replies interesting, and they've given me some perspective into the issues faced by people trying to deal with cutting - from both sides.
But I can also totally understand that this is probably not the forum for it, and that sometimes things which work very well in real life are very difficult to translate properly.

same as above

Oh, and I know you're trying to qualify it as actually being a real problem, but you're speaking to someone who said they're disgusted by these kind of people and I think what they're going to hear is "You should be disgusted, 75% of the time they're just stamping their foot for attention."

Yes I am sure the person who works with troubled kids knows nothing about kids.

Also, IT'S NOT JUST A PHASE DAD

young people do it because they want someone to say "oh my gosh honey are you okay I can see that your problems are very legitimate and I will take them seriously

See, something I've always wondered is, though some people would probably do it either way, if it would be such a thing if it wasn't surrounded by this aura of "this is what all the real fucked-up people do."

On the flip side of this, I've had some pretty gnarly mood/anxiety issues (which are all but in remission now, yay bupropion), but I was always kind of convinced that I wasn't that bad because I didn't happen to do a particular thing that is seen as the end-all be-all of unhealthy behavior. It's only in retrospect that I've realized that, yeah, I was kind of shithouse crazy from age 22-24. I just didn't externalize it in stereotypical ways, which let me live in a sort of state of denial.

Thanks! I was just kind of thinking out loud and didn't know if I was being clear or not.

I am happy to report that I'm no longer shithouse crazy! And kind of boggled that all it took was a low dose of medication. LOL, brains.

(Yeah, my use of "externalize" was kind of nonstandard, and meant something along the lines of "stuff other people notice.")

I am genuinely worried about the kids you work with, I gotta say, if you are this uncaring about their problems. Maybe you should look for a new job.
