Who needs to pirate when you have the right addon

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Media Hint is the best add on I have ever found. I love some of the costume drama BBC produces but part of it never ends up being shown over here. Media Hint bypasses the region check that sites like BBC use so I can just stream shows.

Thanks for the tip, anon!

...I bet that counts as piracy somehow. You're watching it when you don't have permission to. Ask the defender-of-intellectual-property!anon for an authoritative opinion, but I bet that's sketchily legal at best.

I'm fairly certain your assumption is correct. That probably counts as a form of digital IP protection (blocking content not licensed to a particular country), and under the US's DMCA, circumventing such things is illegal. Or at least, I can see that argument being made. It is, after all, a way of gaining access to something outside the proper, legally-established channel. However, I haven't come across anything yet to settle it one way or another, but I might just be sucking at the internet atm.

It is. People in the UK have to pay fees that support the BBC. Which is why the content they may then stream on BBC iPlayer isn't actually "free". So yeah, by-passing the region-check is stealing in that you don't pay the BBC for their online content.

I'd pay them if they let me, though. :(

Wow, thanks for the heads up. Hopefully this will help me see Horrible Histories this year without digging through half the internet just to find it in pieces on Youtube :)
