tw: Exorcisms, abuse, torture

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-05-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sick and have been having all kinds of flashbacks today and think it's time to admit I'm not okay and moving back into the house that I grew up in was probably the worst decision I have ever made even though none of the actual most traumatic events I should be concerned with took place here.

But I think a lot of this was brought on by a conversation I had with a co-worker a few days ago who thinks demonic possession is a thing and exorcisms are real and actually quoted some of those bullshit "based-on-true-events" movies and I just wanted to get this off my chest:

It's not exorcism. It's torture. It's people getting tortured for being mentally ill/under control of the mentally ill, or disobedient, or different. And it still really happens. If you want to have super gross "fun" fantasies about what-if-demons-were-real-and-exorcisms-are-defensible-methods could you not try and pretend it has any basis in reality because there are idiots out there who will nod along and tru-faxs your piece of shit. You are feeding into a very real delusion that hurts people.

And this sentiment goes double for anyone who wants to comment and tell me about that totally weird thing that happened to their aunt's friend.

I should probably clarify I don't have a problem with shows like Supernatural that don't claim to have any relation to reality. There will always be people who read too much into fiction. It's when someone dresses up fiction as maybe~ reality to make it more "exciting" that I get teed off.

Thank you for this clarification.

The clarification wasn't needed.

Apparently it didn't hurt.

Yeah, you can't speak for everybody. Well, you can but not accurately.

Because, sorry, but when people start talking about exorcism stories as "super gross 'fun' fantasies," laws of grammar say the fantasy as a whole is gross, not just the "passing it off as real."

But with the clarification, I think anonymously yours makes a good point.

I agree I worded it very poorly after re-reading it. Which is why I clarified. In retrospect I meant that needing it to feel real was the gross aspect because that means incorporating actual people's suffering into your "headcanon" for titillation but that isn't what I actually said. *facepalm*

I myself often enjoy media such as Supernatural (maybe because it doesn't resemble my own experiences at all so it safely feels like fantasy) so I can hardly point fingers at anyone else.

I'm sorry you're going through a that right now. The point you made about torture being justified as exorcism is something I've never really thought about before (not that I've thought about demonic possession much at all). Thank you for making me aware of it.

Anyway, I hope you can somehow get out of the situation that's triggering your flashbacks and I hope things get better for you.

Sorry for all the rambling and thanks for your concern. Today I was reading articles about exorcisms to try and put my own experiences in context and it just really, really didn't sit right with me that even people who don't believe in demonic possession were calling the descriptions and videos I was watching exorcisms. As if the perpetrators intent somehow changed what was happening to the victim. In some cases I couldn't even be sure the perpetrators truly believed it was an exorcism and weren't just trying to justify their frustration-venting abuse.

Mostly I just wanted to get it off my chest, thanks for listening.

A few years back an autistic kid was smothered/crushed to death under his preacher's body during an exorcism. All because they would not believe he was mentally handicapped, but instead they felt it must be a demon.

And of course there are still people being horribly tortured and murdered for being a suspected witch (Third world countries, but still)

Yeah, this is why you shouldn't promote people's delusions.

Reminder that Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana, fairly well respected Republican, someone whose name has been mentioned as a potential 2016 Presidential candidate, not only believes in exorcisms but actually participated in one when he was in college. He even wrote an essay about it (which is widely quoted around the net, for instance here: http://swampland.time.com/2008/06/11/jindals_exorcism/ and which is pretty disquieting stuff).

Not only does this stuff happen, but apparently you can believe in it and get considered for high office, you can be respected by mainstream political journalists, you can have a political career, despite being involved in it - in something that has to be considered as torture and incredibly harmful and insane by any halfway-rational, decent person. Jesus wept.

I'm sorry you're going through that right now.

This reminded me of how my mom believes my little sister "has demons inside of her" because she doesn't want to go to church. No, mom, she is not fucking posessed, she just finds it boring. Uggghhhhhhhh. Luckily mom hasn't made any noise about getting an exorcism or w/e yet.

I hope you can move back out again soon, sounds like a terrible situation for you.

I absolutely understand you.I cannot stand people who believe in possessions and exorcisms after a case that happened in Romania some time ago.A nun was killed that way.A nun.
