Do you have any volunteer jobs? Are any of your under the table dealings willing to say they asked you to do things regularly for free but more regular job-like? (something like regular babysitting or regular housework for elderly relatives.)

That might be doable. And I do have some volunteer experience, but I never thought of it as "employment" since there's no paycheck.

Employers want to know if you're reliable and if you're a good worker. Volunteering, especially regular volunteering experience, fit the bill.

What's the difference between a volunteer job and a paid job other than you get paid for one and not the other? :P

That's a big difference. I'd really like to try that kind where you get paid for doing stuff.

Don't we all. I'm volunteering for a non-profit right now so I don't mind not getting paid for that job.

Volunteer experience is meant for resumes. That's why you're encouraged to get a lot of it, especially if you're trying to break into a tough jobs market. (Why, hello, Past!Me from the 1990s, however did you turn up here?)

Volunteer experience (especially with references available) is absolutely, 100% relevant, and whatever you did in your volunteer capacity that fits the job you're going after, goes on the resume. Can't stress that enough.
