I know it not mean much coming from an internet stranger, but I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of at all. Having a minimum-wage job is totally normal for people who haven't gone to university yet, and honestly the fact that you're supporting yourself at all is pretty impressive. I think fandom wants to be this fully accepts, mainstream thing. And....no. Fandom does not want to be mainstream and never will be fully accepted. They are writing porn of characters (who look like actors) and actors. Be happy it is ignored and tolerated.
