Meg and Ruby were not *love interests*, they were demons. Sheesh.

Er, sorry, but they were both. Hell, Sam was IN a canon relationship with Ruby for quite some time, and while I wouldn't say Meg was a strong love interest for Cas, I wouldn't have been too surprised to see them get into something if she hadn't been killed. They were certainly heading in that direction in her last episode.

Meg with Castiel, perhaps, though I doubt he'd have followed through. Sam was never in love with Ruby, he was using her just as much as she was using him, plus addiction to her blood plus he *thought* he was saving his brother/the world.

He didn't love her.

I agree he wasn't head-over-heels in love with her, but I'm pretty sure there were some genuine warm feelings there. I'd even argue they were mutual, though hardly healthy and in Ruby's case, rather twisted and possibly complicated by a giant case of denial. She knew the plan was to release Lucifer, but I'm not at all convinced she knew that Sam was intended to be his meatsuit, or that she would've followed through with the plan so whole-heartedly if she had been aware of it.

In any case, it appears we're going by a slightly different definition of "love interest" here, as to me it doesn't necessarily denote the love of a character's life, just a person with whom they are (or could be) involved.

I think Ruby had this idea that if she got 'in' with Sam, she would then be his 2IC when he was Lucifer/Lucifer got free. I think she even deluded herself into thinking she'd made him fall in love with her.

But I think that Sam was so freaked out, screwed up, and basically not himself over Dean, because of the blood, because of the 'powers', etc., that he used her as a distraction and an excuse, but never had any real feelings for her.

To me, love interest means someone they want to have an intimate, emotional relationship with. Cassie was a love interest, as was Lisa, as was Amelia. Most anybody else, though, was just...not. Their nomadic lifestyle, their issues, their history - even people they *liked* (Jo, Sarah, Julie Benz character, can't think of her name right now....) were just too 'complicated', really, to ever become more than a passing notion.

I really did want to see Bobby and Sheriff Jodi get together, though.
