If fanfic writers can make a buck off of their stuff, I say more power to them. In the past, fanartists and fancrafters were the ones who could earn some keep off of fandom while fanfic writers were ignored. Now it's their turn.

Seriously, just shut up.

NA How about you shut up? There's a lot of resentment among a lot of fanfic writers that fanartists and fancrafters can get away w/charging money for their stuff, but if a fanfic writer dares to do the same, omg, the horror, the horror!!!!!!!!! You just slaughtered an infant!!!!!!!! It's evil!!!!!! to make money off of fandom if you're a writer, but, omg, it totes okay if you're an artist or crafter!!!!!!

Fuck that and people who believe that double standard.

nayrt oh wow, I never actually realised I had this double standard... I was perfectly okay with people buying fanart prints and doujinshi, but was against fanfiction on sale. Hm.

It definitely is a double standard; I see this tanking, but it's a regretable double standard in that it essentially says that fanfic is somehow inherently worth less than fanart or crafts.

It makes sense though. When you are buying fanart you are buying a physical object. Something you can hold and own. It can be scanned and shared but you will own the actual copy.

You can't really do that with fanfiction unless you print it out.

I mean, we can try to start up a thing where writers take commissions and write those stories for money while continuing to also produce free things a la art commissions, but the basic idea purchasing commissioned fanart makes sense.

Are you unaware of that fact that a significant number of commissionable fanartists work 100% digital? Any physical copy they give you of their .psd/.gif/.jpg/etc. ain't gonna be any different than if a fanfic writer printed their .doc/etc. and mailed you a pretty copy in a folder or something.

Yeah, I was because all the fanart my friends have ever commissioned have been physical copies. That is bullshit.

Re: Kindle Worlds

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
yeah they're "making money off it" but in a way that's shitty and kind of exploitative for them. they're only making a fraction of the money their work is making & in order to do that, they have to give up future creative rights to their work. this is not empowering for fanfic writers, at all. if you want to create a platform where fanfic writers can monetize their work in a way that doesn't require them to give most of the proceeds to Amazon, feel free (except it would be totally illegal).

i don't know why fanfic writers should feel happy about the ability to give up their work while making lots of profit for the creators and for Amazon.

This is why I think you're wrong.

Fan-stuff should never be charged for, because a) you're using someone else's sandbox, ideas, characters and b) you're participating in a fandom which is about a community of fans, and trying to make money off of it is exploitative.

As I understand it, when artists sell their art, or doujinshi, etc., they are technically selling the "materials" - and making physical copies of art is expensive. Sure, we could say the artist ought to charge the cost of paper alone, but I see wiggle room here purely because it is a physical copy. If a fanfiction writer wanted to print and bind their story nicely and sell that... well, okay.

But electronic data is free, and you've already got a computer with a word program. Seems like trying to make money off of it is not only illegal but seems to go against what fandom ought to be about.

except people sell digital fanart all the time.

When you commission an artist/fanartist to produce a piece art for you, you're definitely not paying for materials used. It is entirely a case of compensating the artist for their time spent creating the piece.
