You mean like Dune?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
THE SPICE MUST FLOW.

Got a bit weird after the first few books, though.

It was weird from the get go. The spice can make you fold space but you turn into a drawing of a sea monkey. YAY!

I lost heart after God-Emperor of Dune tbph. "I made myself into a giant sandworm and now I want out! WAAAAAAHHH!" Yeah, shut up, already.

Well, it's not the 1980s anymore.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Science fiction is a goldmine for that. Just not science fiction on television.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
hence them saying 'network'

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I saw that I just thought it was something that was kind of unclear in the secret itself.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie Dredd has an awesome take on futuristic drugs.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's Torchwood: Children of Earth, sort of.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ish, though it was a plot device means-to-an-end rather than something explored for its own sake.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Like Brave New World and Soma. And wasn't there a Trek novel along similar lines, featuring a computer that turned humans into happy worker drones by 'paying' them with (electronic) pleasure?

...Farscape?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
OP. OP. OP.

Have you seen Defiance yet??? Because that show fits aaaaaallll your needs.
fenm: Fish Eye from "Sailor Moon SuperS" (Default)

There are drug use issues in Defiance?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it was intentional or not, but your pic makes it REALLY look like Ten and Martha are junkies in withdrawal who are casing that alleyway for witnesses before they mug that guy in the background and make off with all his cocaine.

Just sayin'.

This is OT but...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
...David and Freema both look really damn attractive in that pic ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
So start *reading* sci-fi? Seriously, there's a lot of sci-fi that explores really controversial topics like that [and several others]. However, they'll never be on network tv because well...it's controversial - more so than most of the 'controversial' stuff they're willing to put on the air.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
This! OP, pick up a copy of "Wetbones" I guarantee you that book will fill your bill.

There is a big difference between reading it and seeing it, and it doesn't seem unreasonable to wish for something you see often in one medium to appear in another one.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I wasn't saying that there isn't a difference between reading and seeing. However, if you can't find what you want in one medium [which is the OP's problem] looking for it in another is the next best thing.

Ah, so true. I kind of interpreted the secret as the OP wanting to see what they were probably reading about (which is largely biased by the fact I want to see what I'm reading about). Looking at the secret, though, it's easy to see why a lot of people might be looking at it from the other direction.

Um how many sci-fi shows have you seen?
