I suspect it was when he got put in charge of things. Because I think he's great when he's just a writer and somebody else has ultimate creative control. But he needs a leash. There are a lot of writers out there like that, actually; lots of good ideas, but need someone to tell them, "No."

In other words, he's to Doctor Who what Brannon Braga is to Star Trek.

Interesting, intelligent, creative writer who can come up with really weird, interesting ideas, but god forbid he ever gets put in ultimate control of a show.

It can't of been that because he's been a showrunner since the late eighties early 90s. Plus I suspect it's more a fandom hate than a universal hate.

Um, what? No, he hasn't. What are you even talking about? He's only been showrunner since 2010.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's Dr. Who. But he'd the show runner of other shows before Dr. Who.

... what shows?

do they have a fandom the size of doctor who/sherlock that actually discusses his writing? yeah, didn't think so.

Not SF shows, which I think is the reason why DW started out so popular (lowest common denominator), and then eventually as the mediocrity and crazy started dogpiling in ever-increasing quantities, it was getting harder and harder to ignore the smell. (That said I have yet to lay eyes on any of the sitcoms or soap operas Moffat wrote, but you can def. see the sensibilities in DW, unfortunately.) So that's why DW is suddenly getting a lot more complaints now, I think. Plus the whole thing with the 50th and "not looking backwards" was a pretty big straw over that poor camel's back.

As for BBC!Sherlock, the minute Moffat started using Canon as mere window-dressing, and stopped using it for plot and characterization, was when things really went downhill IMO. Of course, he's admitted as much subsequently, saying he'd rather make Basil Rathbone-ish pastiches, so, w/e. His choice, and that's what they pay him for, etc., but that's not what I personally want to see. I think a small chunk of the fandom feels much the same way about the bait-and-switch they pulled (as they said in interviews at the beginning how faithful they were to Canon, how much they adored Canon, etc., etc. which all turned out to be publicity bunk.) Which is what turned a few people from watching the show, so that's why that happened.

JMO, YMMV, I may be out in left field, and it may be some other reason entirely, IDEK.

I completely agree with this assessment and I've been thinking this for a few years ago. I also agree with the comment below this that his problems were there when he just a writer, not a showrunner, but having someone to tell him no probably helped tone those down.
