I just want MILVERTON. IS THAT SO HARD PEOPLE.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I know, right?

Although I tend to subscribe to the theory that Milverton was one of the agents or pawns of Moriarty so I think if you're going to do Milverton (and you totally should) it makes sense to end up doing Moriarty as well. But if you're going to do Moriarty, for God's sake, do Milverton.

Watch Elementary. The episode "Dead Man's Switch" is my favorite adaptation of good ol' Charlie, ever. (I might be biased because I've decided Elementary is the best thing that's ever happened to CBS after Cold Case, so...)

Regardless, the extremely controversial topics were handled sensitively, and you should go watch it. Seriously, right now.

Meh. The episode was fine but Milverton the character was eliminated during the cold open. I thought that episode was the biggest letdown of the entire series.

And not even in the satisfying, "killed by a someone he was blackmailing and she mashes her heel in his face" way he was in canon.

Honestly, I think Milverton has the potential to be as interesting a villain as Moriarty (maybe moreso), and I'm surprised Elementary pretty much just name-dropped him and moved on, instead of making him the main villain of that episode.

Given that there had been a few suicides in real life that the episode seems to have pulled inspiration from, I think they wanted to avoid showing the survivor in a bad light and risk looking like they were victim-blaming.

(No, I wanted to start a new paragraph, not submit a comment!!)

If you're wondering what I was talking about, google Steubenville. Have a punching pillow handy; you're going to need it. But yeah, with all that still fresh when the Milverton story was being written, I'm pretty satisfied with how he was. He was evil, clever, and let's be honest; Elementary is about Sherlock Holmes the character, not Sherlock Holmes the books. I'm just glad they had Milverton without having him turn out to be working for Moriarty at all.

I know about Steubenville... Yeah, I see what you mean.

I want Abbey Grange. And Gloria Scott, though that might be questionable - the idea of a modern adaptation trying to do young!Holmes, college!Holmes, with a friend who isn't Watson, makes me a bit nervous. Oh, and also Copper Beeches, can I have Violet Hunter please? And, hmm, a clean version of the Bruce Partington Plans. And yes, definitely also Milverton. It's fascinating to watch Holmes completely flip his lid at the man.

There's always Granada, of course, but it'd be nice to see more Holmes stories that aren't mix'n'matched versions of Final Problem, Scandal in Bohemia, The Sign of Four and the Hound of the Baskervilles.

Everything about this comment is good and you should feel good.

SA

I was going to add Six Napoleons, but I'm actually pretty happy with Granada on that one. Mirana Sirtis as Lucretia Venucci, and then Colin Jeavons as Lestrade and Jeremy Brett as Holmes in that last scene about made me cry. I almost ended up with a Holmes/Watson/Lestrade OT3 almost purely out of that episode (grumpy Lestrade and Watson trailing Holmes around the countryside at gawdawful in the morning will never not be hilarious).

VIOLET HUNTER

PLEASE

Like even if Elementary did have her she'd just be played as some rival to Joan or be completely useless or different/name-droppish

and I will eat my copies of the collections if BBC tries her because it will just be a clusterfuck

DO NOT LET BBC SHERLOCK ANYWHERE THE FUCK NEAR VIOLET!!! After the godawful mess they made of Irene, if they touch Violet I will ... I don't even know. Let's not go there. I have one lady that no adaptation has managed to ruin yet. BBC Sherlock can touch her over my cold dead body.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY

like they'd make her a live-in mistress instead of a nanny or something and make the twist be that she's a murderer because she's a crazy jealous person or something

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
*well a governess is not a nanny but you know

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
God, just imagining what they'd do with the thing with the hair, and the daughter in the attic. And Watson hoping that Holmes might find her attraction. And that fabulous first conversation, where she plays Holmes gently by making it sound like she wanted him to tell what choices to make, before going 'actually I've already made up my mind, I just wanted you to listen to me long enough to lay it out so I could ask you to be my backup when my creepy employer finally shows his colours' ...

Guarantee you. Flat guarantee. They will turn Violet from a sensible and desperate young woman going to someone for backup before she goes into a dangerous situation, into a damsel in distress who ignores a man's sage advice, lands herself in danger, and ends up needing to be rescued by the man she's secretly in love with but who doesn't love her because girls, you know?

I flat guarantee it.

I think you just hit on what I don't like about the BBC Sherlock v. women

very very ham-fisted NO HOMO NO HOMO backslapping but also with a fist-to-the-gut of 'but ew icky stupid wimmens'
