Wow, go fuck yourself. I never said my cousin was useless. He's a wonderful, friendly boy and we all love him dearly. But that doesn't change the fact that he needs constant care and he does, unfortunately, occasionally have violent mood swings. This is the reality for some people with autism. I'm sorry his existence offends you for some reason.

I am incapable of living on my own. I need to be prompted to eat, to sleep, to perform basic hygiene tasks, because otherwise I would forget completely. I'm not always capable of communicating verbally, and I lashed out in anger quite frequently when I was younger.

I'm not offended by my own existence. I'm offended by the way you've decided what I, and people like me, can and can't accomplish.

Great! You are a success story. I guess you get to dictate what every other person with autism can do! Are you the queen or king of all people with autism?

(frozen comment) Re: DA

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, but I'm a lot more qualified to speak on the subject than allistics are.

(frozen comment) Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
na

as someone else with autism could you maybe...stop speaking about the subject? it's embarrassing

Shut the fuck up about how you know everything because of YOUR CASE. You're an idiot.

as someone with autism who cannot live alone and cannot care for myself fully without assistance I am telling you to shut up and go away

you are offensive and embarrassing

and STOP USING THE WORD 'ALLTISTICS' it is stupid and childish and humiliating

(frozen comment) Re: DA

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
How exactly is a word that means "people who don't have autism" humiliating?

(frozen comment) Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
because people who don't have autism are people who don't have autism

neurotypical is the word you mean but you are refusing to use it because you seem to think we have a magic superpower and not a disability

it's embarrassing for US when you act so dumb in our name

Yes, you're an high-functioning autistic person, we get it. However, that does not give you the right to speak for everyone with an ASD. I have met many, many people with autism because of I actually have THREE family members who are autistic (and as such we're part of the ASD community), and none of them are HFAs.

It's great that you have such pride in your disorder, okay? But you need to open your eyes and realize that no everyone is as privileged as you are, and not everyone sees it that way.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not actually "high-functioning", though! That is the point that you apparently missed.

Autism doesn't reduce a person to a drooling, mindless shell. Society does that.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just the fact that you can argue on the Internet is more than many autistic people can do. You know what I would give for my cousin to be able to browse the 'Net? Heck, or even read and write? Do you know how lucky you are?

Yes, there are autistic people who are definitely intelligent even if they lack effective communication skills. But why leave them with that disadvantage if there were other options.

If they somehow discovered a way for her to be cured (because yes, it IS a disorder), my entire family would scrap up every penny we had just so that she'd have a chance of living a normal life.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do know how lucky I am. I'm lucky to have access to a computer. I'm lucky that I wasn't written off as hopeless and not given access to things that help me communicate "normally".

Lack of verbal communication isn't all that autism is. "Curing" someone of autism would change every single thing about them - the way they process sensory input, the way they process information, the way they think and act and feel about absolutely everything. It isn't a tidy little package that you can just take out of someone's mind.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I get that, okay? But at the end of the day it's still a disorder, and the way you process information and behave and think and so on is still disordered, atypical thinking/behavior.

No offense, but that's the way it is. Autism is a disorder. It's not a personality trait. It's not something anyone chooses to be. It's a disorder, and I do hope that one day there is a cure for it (even if only by way of prevention).

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
so you are one of those idiots who thinks behavioral therapy is eugenics

just stop

You're obviously not high functioning, because if you were, you'd comprehend just how much of a cunt you're being. And THAT is why you'll never get anywhere, not the fact that you've (supposedly) got some degree of Autism.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I literally have done nothing of the sort? My cousin can barely communicate and he definitely isn't able to use the internet and he probably will never be able to because he has severe, low functioning autism. It's like you think that no one could possibly be more autistic than you and that since you are able to perform certain tasks now, then everyone should be able to. that isn't how it works. just because he's autistic doesn't mean we don't cherish him, but the severity of his disorder means he will just never accomplish certain, basic things that most people do and we've all had to accept that about him and we don't love him any less. that also doesn't mean he's worth less as a person. I don't know why you can't handle this idea

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is he unable to use the Internet, or do you just think he's unable to use the Internet?

I "can't handle this idea" because autism doesn't reduce someone to a mindless shell. It just doesn't! That's not how it works! People with autism can still think. They can communicate, if they're given ways to do that. The problem is that society has decided that autism is bad, and there's no point in trying to communicate with autistics, so they never get the opportunity to prove that they can.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
he's unable to use the internet because he breaks electronics and is incapable of comprehending their function. he has very low cognitive skills

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
notice how they have no response to this

because even they know you can't just shout that 'the computer fails to understand his attempts at communication omg!!!'

Allistics can't magically understand electronics either. They need to be taught. Autistics are at a disadvantage here because they often can't absorb information and skills by watching others display them.

So of course he can't use a computer, if no one's taught him how.

Then I wouldn't really want you to have a wand, either. You wouldn't be any worse than some people they already give wands to, I suppose, but I am not okay with irrational outbursts of anger no matter what medical reason you have.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Anger and violence in autistics isn't a symptom of autism. It's frustration, and an attempt to communicate.

Autistic people don't lash out because they want to hurt people. They do it because people aren't listening and anger gets people's attention.

(Some autistic people do genuinely wish people harm, of course. Just like some allistic people wish other people harm.)

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
uh sometimes I lash out because my brain stops functioning due to stress or input or fear or excitement or a million other things

I could kill someone if I had a gun or a wand or any harmful device when this happens

acknowledging this is not a crime and it's not wrong

it's not even ablist

So who prompts you to be a dick on the internet? I'm assuming you have someone.
