at the risk of another argument - I know you work with people with mental illness so I was wondering which side you'd come down on

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, Stella. I'm curious about your stance on the issue, though. You usually get to the point of things (without mincing words).

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
which issue though? the issue of whether or not you believe in severely low functioning autistism or the issue of whether a cure for autism would be ethical?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
well I made the first comment to her and I meant the latter

but this looks like a job for the general comments really

the answers to those questions are pretty obvious, tho

respectively, "yes" and "i refuse to answer because there's no way it doesn't stir up an insane hornet's nest"

I don't know how much my opinion matters.

idk, you're a smart, intelligent person who knows stuff about issues like this, and who obviously cares really deeply about issues like this. i pretty much always find your opinions on this stuff interesting for whatever that's worth.

Fwiw, your LERNINGS give you credibility, and at least folk will know that you know what you're talking about since your opinions and whatnot don't come from a place of conjecture or experience that is not your own. I like your comments here because you also pretty much get to the point without superfluous junk. Fandom (and f!s imo) needs to chill out sometimes and accept straight-forwardness already.

Keep on rockin' on ♥

You and I might disagree once in a while, but I think you handle mental health in a clear and concise way, so there is that?

Those frozen threads are part of why I'm embarassed about my potential autism

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-24 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
With people like baxaron increasingly becoming the face of autism, even if ever manage to scrounge up enough independent finances to go see a professional about some of my more autism-like traits, I'm probably never actually going to. Fuck it, I'm high-functioning enough to get away with some books and websites, I'll damn well do it and keep my own name and image as far away from baxaron and all the other anti-neurotypical types as possible.

I'm not worried about doctors mixing me up with people like baxaron, I'm worried about trying to explain this in real life and being associated with people like baxaron. While I know not most or even many cases would end up like this, enough would to make me wary, which is more of another drop in the bucket of "I think I'll keep this to myself" than anything else.

I tend to sit on a borderline where I could be someone without autism who is just socially low-functioning due to certain circumstances of my childhood resulting in not enough social learning. Or I might be someone with autism who is high-functioning enough due to spending significant chunks of my childhood with my nose buried in books about social interaction that were likely written for autistic kids in the first place, even if I didn't know it at the time.

Books are still helpful today, and I figure that if I'm functioning well enough off of those, why bother dealing with official channels? If I confirm an autism diagnosis, it'll cause a shitstorm on one side of the family, and if I confirm a lack of it, it'll cause a shitstorm on the other side of the family, and I don't have enough resources to get this checked out without them. Official channels are more trouble than they're worth.

Especially since official channels are the ones causing me grief these days. Way back in the day I used to follow some blogs and websites for older autistic students, offering tips and study guides and stuff. While they weren't "for me" because I am not autistic (presumably), they were immensely helpful and I loved them to bits. But computer shit happened, and I lost the bookmarks. Now whenever I try looking for them again, all I get is various people studying autism and autism advocacy. What little I find about studying and learning as an autistic student is geared towards parents and teachers of young autistic students. It seems that outside of disability advocacy, college aged autistic students don't exist (and apparently, enabling autistic students to learn for themselves and help themselves is no longer a thing like I thought it used to be). It's great that there are all these things available in real life, but now it's difficult to find online help that doesn't depend on you having some kind of real life connection to "organized autism" or having gotten some kind of professional assistance when you were younger. :(

/whining (Sorry about that. It's finals season, so this has been especially frustrating for me as of late.)

I increasingly tend to side-eye a lot of friends-and-family efforts to 'enable independence' for autistics because whenever I see any of the modern/online stuff, it's always for other people to help them out (things like teachers and parents helping younger kids, or advocacy to get tutors and other external help or concessions for older kids and adults). How exactly are autistic people supposed to become functionally independent if, in the rush for everyone to help them, there's no room for them - those who can, at least - to help themselves? >.<

As for the help - I think I love you and want to have your Internet babies if you've got anything that can help me. :D (But that said, please don't put yourself out if it's troublesome or out of your way - while this sort of thing is frustrating for me, it's not detrimental and I have still been able to do fairly well in school and even manage a social life with what tools I have). I'll have to look up skillstreaming when I get home (currently answering from school ironically enough). From the looks of a brief google, it seems to designed to teach social skills rather than study skills, but I'll take a deeper look into it later. ♥

And no worries about awkwardness! I'd be one of the biggest hypocrites on the planet if I tried to be snide about being overtly-academic (one of my friends in elementary school had to act as occasional unofficial translator for me, when talking to other people, because I "used too many long words"). Hopefully your kids will be able to help themselves a little easier than I have. :)
