Am I the only one who that Luna Lovegood was Autistic?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly thought that Luna was somewhere on the Autism spectrum. She just fell onto the more high-functioning end, and never got any kind of therapy/treatment for it due to the fact this isn't well known in the wizarding world.

I mean, there aren't that many people in it, even if you had the same percentage of autistic wizards as autistic Muggles, that still probably wouldn't be enough autistic wizards to warrant attention and research - especially in a society so full of and accepting of eccentric people as wizards are that many people with autism in that world would likely go 'unnoticed'. (Really, one could argue a lot of the more eccentric wizards we've seen are autistic - they just aren't called that in the wizarding world.)

Or maybe she did get something, and the fact that she was actively 'trained' in reading faces and emotions and such is part of why she is often so intuitive (I've noticed a few autistic friends who put so much effort into learning how to read faces and body language and other social interactions they can't get naturally that they end up much better at it than neurotypicals).

Anyway, OP, I don't know what your situation is, but there's a good chance your brother would've been accepted, too! And even if not, you'd still see him on various breaks and vacations throughout the year. :)

I do not know much about the history of autism diagnosis and studies, but I also assume a lot less was generally known at the time too, since HP was set in the 90's.

Dude, I still meet people today who have little to no idea what autism even is or have never really heard of it, even. The first book wasn't even published until 1997, and autism didn't really gain traction/publicity until the last decade or so.

I only know about autism because at one point I was sidestreamed with a bunch of kids who had various special needs, and one of them was an autistic girl. (hearing loss, in my case)
