I do not know much about the history of autism diagnosis and studies, but I also assume a lot less was generally known at the time too, since HP was set in the 90's.

Dude, I still meet people today who have little to no idea what autism even is or have never really heard of it, even. The first book wasn't even published until 1997, and autism didn't really gain traction/publicity until the last decade or so.

I only know about autism because at one point I was sidestreamed with a bunch of kids who had various special needs, and one of them was an autistic girl. (hearing loss, in my case)
