13. [SPOILERS for Iron Man 3]

Aw, that shouldn't have to be a secret! I cried almost as much for them as I did for Agent Coulson.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I never thought tony would leave them like that so the ending was perfect

[personal profile] 30_rock_office 2013-05-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am totally with you. I knew they wouldn't kill off any of the people characters except the bad guy(s), but since they were robots, I thought they would let them "die," which made me sad since Tony made DUM-E when he was in college. I was very relieved to see that they were okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought for a second--given the direction of the film--that they might let Pepper or the president die. I was really excited, because that right there would take some serious writing balls and acting chops.

Instead we got the cookie cutter perfect ending where even the bots survive, and it's all very Hollywood same-y. d__d Not excited, to say the least.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Fridging the main love interest doesn't take balls, it's a cliche of the highest degree littered throughout movies like this.

I was the same way. When the house was destroyed I actually gasped out loud in the theater and whispered, "Dummy!" I was so happy to see Stark at the end carting him away. It was sweet that Dummy was the only thing he thought was worth going through the rubble for. (Jarvis is more of a portable A.I. program, so I wasn't worried about him. Tony probably downloaded Jarvis to his phone and went on his way.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I highly doubt even a Starkphone has the space for something as massive as a fully-fledged AI. I think JARVIS is probably a bit like the Machine in Person of Interest - a system intelligence physically housed in a bunker somewhere but uplinked into Stark Industries and Tony's personal systems.

Plus he's also at the Tower.

They weren't the only ones I was worried for but, yeah, when then house went down I afraid they wouldn't come back. That made me very sad. So I felt the ending was a very nice touch.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's perfectly reasonable.

Me too. I was worried about them the whole later half of the movie, and I was so glad he went back for them.

Everyone cares far too much for those damn bots. You're hardly alone.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but my sister did. She doesn't cry during movies, and doesn't feel much sympathy for living characters either. But give her some sad inanimate objects (IKEA lamp) or some woobie robots (WALL-E), and she's close to tearing up. She's rather manly like that.

Anywho, I should ask her about this.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely cry during movies and for living characters, but nothing slays me quite like an inanimate object.

I almost cried and was sad for hours after I first saw the Pixar lamp animation with the ball. Just think about it makes me sad.

... Yes, I know that's weird.

There are only two robots: DUM-E and U.

"Butterfingers" doesn't exist, it's just a snotty nickname he uses in passing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Either there is one named Butterfingers or fanon has decided there is, because there are many stories with all three.

But it would also explain why OP could not find a pic with all 3.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's fanon only. IM2 and IM3 make it really clear that there are only two bots, DUM-E and U.

TvTroppes says this:

In the Future, We Still Have Roombas: Tony has robotic arm things to help him out when he is inventing, in his garage/lab, called Butterfingers, Dummy and You. They seem to get in the way more than help him though and at one point he threatens to donate one to a city college.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/IronMan

But I will not really say that is the truth, or that I am right, because tbh I don't really know that much about The Iron Man films, I see them that is it.

aww, I was really happy when they came back. When you see DUM-E at the end I got really excited the first time I saw it <3

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
When the house went down, I was all, but nooooooooooooo not Dum-E, Butterfingers, and U! I was also concerned for Jarvis for a few seconds. I was so happy when he reclaimed them at the end.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I cried the hardest over those dang robots. I love em.

Don't worry about Butterfingers, he doesn't exist

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-25 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There are only Dummy and You - the Butterfingers things comes from a line in Iron Man 1 when Tony says "You, butterfingers, what's with this mess..." Tony was addressing You and then calling him butterfingers, but a lot of people apparently interpreted this as Tony using "you" as a declarative and then addressing a bot named Buttefingers. Fanon just got carried away with it from there - while the main obsession is Dummy, Butterfingers comes in second (third if you count JARVIS in, too) because most people mistake You for "Butterfingers", as that was who Tony called Butterfingers in the first place (I think that's it, anyway...).

Anyway, I'm with you, OP. I was so worried about the bots, too, and I was so happy to see they were (relatively) okay/salvageable at the end. ♥
