Aww, I'm sad to hear that. The unusual soft-spokenness and gentleness is one of my favorite traits of Eight, especially after how much of a ruthless bastard Seven was, and how tragically Eight's character arc ended.

(I mean, I love Seven, but having him regenerate into someone like Eight made for a really nice direction of character development).

Same. I love that facet of Eight's personality. <3

Maybe the fact that McGann and Rickman could be brothers (or at least cousins)?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I really love McGann's voice, personally. It's one of the things I've always found attractive about him and Eight (says the fan who's never listened to any of the audios except that re-make of "Shada") but to each their own.

For some reason pffffhahah

For serious they do look similar though.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, you should try out the audios if you can. His voice is pure distilled sex. Also, he doesn't spend half the time in a confused daze, like in the TVM, so he's a lot more lively.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This. Try the audios. Not only are the plots often better than on the show (both NewWho and Classic), McGann is a great voice artist, and there's a reason so many Paul McGann fangirls lust after his voice.

Ahhh, thisss! I love the audios. I could just listen to him talk all day. *___*

Aww, that's too bad. I really love his voice! Maybe try a couple of his audios? He's maybe my favourite Doctor, but I never would have thought so just based on the movie. Even if you don't check any of his other stuff out, props for giving him a try! I like seeing New Who fans giving Eight a chance.

But his voice is the best. It's like ice cream. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
But nonnie, nonnie, nonnie, his voice is the best thing about him! Like some one above said, distilled sex. I get you had expectations based on Rickman, but once you get over the dissonance, give the audios a try. He is m a g i c a l in them. And he might seem soft spoken but he's not what you'd call a gentle puppy either - he plays with that voice. It's mesmerising and it can be menacing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
* Also, if you hear his rage in To The Death, you might change your mind instantly.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
* Also, you can totally believe this is someone who would press the button to end the Time War.

While everyone is here talking about the audiobooks--how can I get my hands on them? Is there a master list of them somewhere? Are they on Amazon? iTunes? Can I get them on CD? (It's my preferred format atm, don't judge meeeee) And most importantly, should I get them all in order if possible, or are there any I should just skip? I beg the wisdom of F!S.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
They're put out by Big Finish who are licensed by the BBC to produce them, you could start at http://www.bigfinish.com/ - they have other distributors though.

As for whether in order or not... how much money do you have? There's lots of them. Here's a list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Eighth_Doctor_audio_plays
None of them are dire and skippable, at least not by wide fandom consent. Many of the plays have overreaching story arcs, but most can be taken as self-contained. Storm Warning is the first play put out, in 2001, but the recent Mary Shelley audios are set earlier. The recent Dark Eyes is set the latest - it follows on from To The Death but it could be taken by itself.

I don't really know what to specifically recommend, as I like them all, but a lot of people cite The Chimes of Midnight as being a fantastic play (it's really really creepy).

There are two main companions, the Edwardian adventurer Charley Pollard (whose style of companioning was reportedly influential on the new series), and later the ballsy Lucie Miller, but there are other companions too. You could start from the Lucie Miller ones if you liked - they have a quite New Who feel to them, deliberately so.

Anyway, good luck and I hope you like them! There are many guides out there for prospective fans that can do a better job than me. And if you can't afford all of them, there are ...cheaper versions out there. Including on LJ communities if you can find the Big Finish fans.

Ooh, thanks anon, this was very helpful! :D

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ususally watch Dr Who - I don't even usually watch movies just because a certain actor is in them! But I watched this movie for no other reason than Paul and his voice. I found it amusing how soft-spoken and gentle he was in that movie. See, I know him from the Hornblower movies. And while he has that gentle tone there as well, what ... impressed me the most was him hollering commands. It's very nice.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
He does make a fabulous Lt Bush, oh yes.

Haha I used to think he'd be Snape-like too.
But Paul McGann's voice is beautiful. It's literally perfect. Get you some audios

Caerdroia <3

McGann plays three aspects of the same Doctor (Responsible, Carefree and Scary) and has the most convincing conversations with himself. It's riiight in the middle of a big story arc but it's fantastic so I'd recommend it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Lord, I adore Caerdroia. Scary Doctor is fantastic.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with the rest. See if you can find the most recent Big Finish Audio drama he did called "Dark Eyes" A very good Doctor Who drama and McGann's voice is liquid honey to listen to.
