the thing is that smoking in a smoke-free area isn't a reason to get mad at smokers and go on rants about how evil smoking is. it's a reason to get mad at assholes, for being assholes. it's weird to go on rants about how smoking is evil and no one should do it on the basis of your dislike for a behavior that is not "smoking"

Fair enough.

I think my rant didn't actually imply "asshole" until the last bit, with the smoking in smoke-free areas and JUDGING YOU. The first part was about assuming people are smokers on the basis of their writing characters as smokers, which is apparently incorrect, to my surprise. (I'm frankly amazed that people who do smoke think smoking is sexy. File that under YKINMK, I suppose.) The second part was assuming people were stupid to start, which I already knew was unfair.

Smoking is bad because it slowly and painfully kills you, and slowly and painfully kills everyone around you. The amount it enrages me isn't actually relevant.

People have the right to slowly and painfully kill themselves, whether it's with cigarettes or alcohol or unhealthy food or whatever. Killing people around themselves is less cool, which is why I don't judge smokers, but definitely judge parents who smoke around their children etc.
