I know hindsight's 20/20, but you probably should've just admitted the identity was a false one and told them you felt uncomfortable revealing your actual personal information. I used to belong to a Harry Potter rp board where one of the older, big name users confessed his name/age/country/location were all lies and nobody really gave a fuck. All in all, no one should feel like they have to tell strangers on the internet their life story, and it's kind of weird that someone would expect it, fandom friend or not.
And if you really feel that much regret about, IDK, I think I'd just go back and tell them. If you really had a good connection with them, yeah they might be a bit angry at first, but I'm sure they rather have an old friend back than to continue thinking your dead.
