I'd personally buy it if the character in question was self-destructive and/or is someone who is likely to self-medicate, or if they seemed like the kind of people who might have taken it up as a teen just to fit in. There's probably a ton of other reasons for a fic writer to justify portraying a character smoking, so long as it isn't too far-fetched.

Anyway, it might take you out of the fic you're reading but I don't get the judging part of this secret. Fictional smoking shouldn't harm you so I don't think you should be so adamant about it.
