One: I suspect you're wrong about people writing smokers being smokers themselves. Smokers see smoking as a day to day event. If there's somthing they particularly enjoy about smoking, it's the feel of the thing. For non-smokers smoking is a much or fetishistic thing. They enjoy the look of it.

Two: smoking is sexy. I invite you to think of the shape the mouth forms when somone takes a drag on a cigarette.

Three: Smoking is cool. It's just the 'I don't give a damn' look of the thing. Seriously, most of the top icons of cool are smokers. I mean, think about it, has james bond ever looked as awesome as he did in THAT scene in dr no. You know that scene. you know.

I could possibly agree with "the look of the thing" being kind of sexy, but IMO "the smell of the thing" is so off-putting that it negates any sexiness. YMMV.
