The saddest part of this is that OP lost friends who could have been important people in their life without giving them a chance. Sure maybe meeting up would have been a disaster and the friendships might have ended. But it's all over now anyway and it's been painful for everyone. There's nothing to do but move on.

I understand the dread and panic because I never want to meet up with people I meet online either. But I have and the world didn't end and I've made some important friends. At the same time you also get to find out if others are who you think they are.

And it doesn't matter where you live, what you do, what colour your hair is, what you do for a living - that's all secondary to who we are through a keyboard. And it seems a lot of pain has been caused in this case because our fake IDs are still us in the end.
