Uh. I'm violently asthmatic (still nursing a previously-collapsed lung, amongst other woes. Proximity to smoke or the scent of it wrecks me. I write people smoking all the time because it is physically attractive to me. And to the 'but irl the smell would be horrid!!!!1' - yes. Yes, irl, it would. Irl, murderers are horrible but I still enjoy writing about them. In my fiction.
