Exactly. The reason Holmes admired Irene as much as he did was that she outsmarted him. True, even before he saw her as intriguing (in that he understood why men would find her attractive) - but it wasn't until she not only saw through his disguise but one bettered him by pulling her own version of it that she became "the woman."
