Have you seen the episode that's from? That's the reason for the icon status.

Context matters. It's not just the image alone, it's the scene it comes from.

It's like.. the defining moment of the season 2 finale, and encapsulates most of Buffy in a one-word line.

Plus, she caught a sword with her hands. Totes cool amirite

The point is the speech. Angelus taunts Buffy that alone, without her friends and her weapons, she's useless. This moment proves that that's not true.

Have you seen the episode??

Yeah he says, basically, "You got nothing left." (She'd been fighting with a sword, and it got knocked away by that point; her friends were hospitalized, she'd been kicked out of school, was wanted by the police, etc.)

And she says, iirc, "Wrong. I've got me."

(Tears me up just typing that, it does.)

(The only moment I like better is the reprise of that in S5's "Checkpoint" where she throws the sword past the guy's face and says "I'm pretty sure I said no interruptions."

It always seemed, in some ways, a callback to the S3 premiere, "Anne", as well. When you're saving the world, apparently the lesson you have to learn most often is that the iron in your spine is only strong if you make it so.

And I'm ok with that, because even as a regular person going through regular life I have to remind myself of that an awful lot.

"Becoming" was the season two finale, the episode right before "Anne".

Nevermind, I knew I missed something.

It was the turning point of the whole season, basically. The moment in which Buffy realized that she'd lost everything else, but she still had herself, and that was enough. After that moment she began to fight back against Angelus and win.

"No friends, no etc... Take that all away and what is left?"

"(stops sword from killing her) Me."

Because context, OP. :P

I've barely seen five episodes this series in my life (I KNOW, A HORRIBLE CHILD OF THE 90'S WAS I, I DIDN'T WATCH FRIENDS EITHER) but you never call a fandom on their crowning moments without context.

I ... didn't realize it was an iconic image. I've seen it before, I'm sure, but I didn't know it was anything special (I started watching Buffy in season 4 though I am catching up on the older stuff on DVD).

That said, having read the context, yeah, I can see why it would be iconic.

Random question. Is the Buffy fandom still going strong? Oh, how I love Buffy (never joined the fandom though).

oh man, it was fucking greaaaaaat. Here let me spoil you: her boyfriend lost his soul by having sex with her (which was sad and then hilarious and then just awesome) and became the big bad of the whole season. In the last episode of that season, they have a big climactic fight WITH SWORDS while he tries to unleash some shit that will bring on some apocalypse and she's trying to stop him. He's winning. He's taunting her. He disarms her and then taunts her some more. I rewatched it recent-ishly so I even remember the exact words, he's like "no weapons....no friends, no hope! Take all that away, and what's left?" and he swings the sword down at her. EYES CLOSED, she fucking catches it. Then she opens her eyes and says "me." and then she wins

It's because of the dialogue in the scene, not the shot itself.
