Yeah, all the Vulcans I've seen in Star Trek separate the thumb as well. Call me a fandom snob but it really grates my cheese when fans do it without the separation /o\

I got my picture taken with Leonard Nimoy at a con and he didn't separate his thumb.

I want to show this to everyone who's ever called me a "fake fan" because the only Star Trek I've seen was the movie series that started in 2009.

...Honestly, the reason I'd call someone a 'fake fan' if they were a fan of the movies has more to do with the fact the entire idea behind the series changed with the 2009 movies, and the emphasis of philosophy was basically dropped for explosions.

And even then, only if they were claiming to be a fan of the tv series as well, if they'd never seen it.

Why would someone call themselves a fan of television they've never seen? I didn't even let myself insult Twilight until I read all four books (okay, I skipped half the fourth book, bu seriously, I don't think I missed many important things).
