It depends for me. Comedy that relies primarily on humiliation or scatological humour, no, I hate those, they make me cringe. Comedies that are more about pointing out fundamental absurdities in the way things work, I'm there (things like Yes Minister or Dr Strangelove or Blackadder). I think the basic difference for me is, if the characters appear to be there purely to be laughed at, I don't like it. If the characters are still people that the audience can react with more than just giggles when their pants fall down, then I can manage.

I like a bit of pathos with my humour, is what I'm saying.

Oh god, Blackadder is so very good.
I'm always sad when people know of Mr. Bean but not of Blackadder.

Absolutely this. Comedy just feels like bullying to me when it's "look at how stupid these people are!" Comedy that makes you love the people and feel like you're laughing WITH them (or even at them, but in that, "ohhhh, you are the silliest, let me love you!" way)? I am all over it.
