Stop watching sitcoms on CBS then.

Obviously if someone doesn't like a genre, it's because they only ever watched the examples YOU don't like.

Have you tried Bob's Burgers? Funny without being overly demeaning (like Family Guy). And you can jump in and out of episodes (there isn't really any overreaching plot).

Bob's Burgers is indeed a funny fucking show. Family Guy is one of the worst shows on television.

I love Bob's Burgers so much. It's really hilarious, but you can tell that the family really loves each other, and they aren't putting down, say, Tina for being socially awkward (which is why I really hated Family Guy).

I finally watched Bob's Burgers because so many people kept saying it was so funny. Awful. It was fucking awful. Thus proving yet again, different strokes for different folks.

I agree. Bob's Burgers is surprisingly good. (Surprisingly because I thought it would be Family Guy-esque and it's not.)

I think I can kind of understand where you're coming from. While I also like a good laugh, I don't really like shows and films that are purely comedy. A lot of things get stretched for the sake of humour and it falls flat a lot of the time. I feel embarrassed if I don't laugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends for me. Comedy that relies primarily on humiliation or scatological humour, no, I hate those, they make me cringe. Comedies that are more about pointing out fundamental absurdities in the way things work, I'm there (things like Yes Minister or Dr Strangelove or Blackadder). I think the basic difference for me is, if the characters appear to be there purely to be laughed at, I don't like it. If the characters are still people that the audience can react with more than just giggles when their pants fall down, then I can manage.

I like a bit of pathos with my humour, is what I'm saying.

not op

same here! i like laughing at the world, and life, not at specific people!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, Blackadder is so very good.
I'm always sad when people know of Mr. Bean but not of Blackadder.

Well, after seeing this secret I realized that the only show/film on my list of favourites that can possibly qualify as "comedy" is Holy Flying Circus. And then Monty Python themselves, of course. This is because I'm very fond of them. Not everything in The Flying Circus (or Holy Flying Circus, for that matter) is funny, but I just love the projects so much that I overlook the non-funny moments in my bliss.

And then I like some stand-up comedians (say, Carlin), for pretty much the same reason. IDK. Doing comedy wrong.

Although of course I wouldn't like them if funniness and originality were not prevailing.

IA on the majority of other "comedy" things, I'd say. I can't imagine how people watch sitcoms or romcoms or whatnot that are more than three episodes long. But then different strokes for different folks.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. I haven't seen any comedy shows or movies I like. Ever. But there are a lot of dramas that have comedy I enjoy, like sarcasm and wit. Different strokes, YMMV, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but only for the recent trend of dudebro comedy = the best comedy. I can't stand The Hangover, Ted, and a lot of those other films, but I still really like, say, Ace Ventura and Blazing Saddles.

I'm the same, anon. I find most comedy painfully unfunny. People are always trying to get me to watch sitcoms and shit and I have zero interest.

I love comedy films when I actually find them funny, but tragically, this is not often the case. the best example is happy gilmore, which I was totally stoked to watch and very disappointed to find that it didn't make me laugh more than once. people act like it's one of the funniest movies ever.

For the first time ever I can say: Are you me?

I pretty much agree with you. Most comedy gives me bad secondhand embarrassment. I can maybe get through a comedy movie once, but probably won't be able to stand watching it again. I even have trouble with movies that are not comedy per se, but have humour in them that bugs me when I watch it again.

The only comedy I really seem to like is British or Australian stand-up. British stand-up has a strong streak of sarcasm that Australian stand-up has inherited.

So much me. I can't watch comedy movies pretty much at all. And while I keep trying comedy shows, I tend to either not find them funny or get embarrassed by them. (Or both!)

The only comedy I like is Better Off Ted. Dry humor is what does it for me. :)

I'm with you, OP

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
If anything advertises itself as a comedy, I'll avoid watching it, because dear god so much of it is just second-hand embarrassment and endless cringing on my part (cringing and sometimes leaving the room/theater). Movies with comedy and humor in them, I like, but comedy-genre movies? For the most part, not happening (ESPECIALLY romantic comedies!).

I'm kind of the same. There's a LOT of comedy I can't watch because I get supreme secondhand embarrassment, but things like Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood Men in Tights, Keeping Up Appearances, Fawlty Towers, etc.

At the same time, I hate when I'm watching crime dramas and inevitably there's some sort of romantic relationship tossed in between main characters. I just want to watch crimes get solved okay!! :|

I personally don't find 98% of US comedy funny at all, I'm Australian and was raised on mostly UK comedy which is quite different. Red Dwarf was my fave show as a teenager, for instance. And other British classics like the Young Ones, the Goodies, Yes Minister, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Drop The Dead Donkey ... I was a huge fan of the Australian D-Generation. (Lots of terrible terrible UK comedy however.) More recently, Misfits and NZ's show about Norse gods The Almighty Johnsons are memorable for making me laugh til I cried which is one of the best feelings ever. I like my comedy to have a big dose of snark or pathos or absurdity, and I also appreciate shows, comics and books which liberally mix in comedy with the drama, Doctor Who for instance, and Joss Whedon's stuff despite him being gasp, USian. I just Don't Get US sitcoms, I feel like I've had a humour bypass, the laughter track sure thinks the characters are hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it makes you humorless at all! I don't like most modern TV or movie comedies, myself. There's just so much secondhand embarrassment, humiliation of the characters, and the same old jokes wrapped up and presented as shiny and new. To my surprise, I did find that I love New Girl, and I couldn't put my finger on why until I realized it's because the characters, absurd as they are, feel like real people that you are actually supposed to empathize with. They're weird, all of them, and ridiculous, over-the-top stuff happens to them, but at the end of the day I feel like the story wants us to love them, not mock them. (Plus it pretty neatly defied the "one awesome lady and her dudebro friends" stereotype, which I don't think the original ads for it showed well, and it sort of gently teases Zooey Deschanel's usual Manic Pixie type character by making her a realistic person to whom people react realistically.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the exact same, OP. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
