Have you tried Bob's Burgers? Funny without being overly demeaning (like Family Guy). And you can jump in and out of episodes (there isn't really any overreaching plot).

Bob's Burgers is indeed a funny fucking show. Family Guy is one of the worst shows on television.

I decided I was grown up the day I realized I can't watch Family Guy or Tosh.0 anymore. I was either worried, disgusted, or embarrassed while watching.

The last time I laughed at Family Guy, 9/11 hadn't even happened yet. I don't think the Cincinnati riots had either.

(it was Lois or whatever her name was yelling at Peter in public for completely ruining a theater adaptation of Anna and the King and Peter's sole response is a 10 second fart that gets everyone laughing.)

I don't get why *anyone* likes Family Guy. My SO watches sometimes and i have to just leave the room.

I stopped watching a loooong time ago, but what drew me in back then was the dog. I was strangely fascinated by the concept of having a talking dog that everyone treated like a normal occurrence in-universe even though all other dogs seemed to be non-sentient. But the novelty of that wore off quickly.

That was a bit baffling, but then we've got the dog *dating people*, it's like....wtf? Bestiality? Wha? It was just...not on.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think that was around the time I stopped watching, haha! I only remember him having a crush on his owner. Which I found rather funny since I have dogs myself and I've been walking around naked before their eyes many times XD

I've just seen it in bits here and there, as my SO watches sometimes, or my daughter turns it on, or i skip past it on the tv. And it just...it just really does nothing for me except make me cringe, basically.

I love Bob's Burgers so much. It's really hilarious, but you can tell that the family really loves each other, and they aren't putting down, say, Tina for being socially awkward (which is why I really hated Family Guy).

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!
And not only is she socially awkward, she is crazy for boys without being a stupid stereotype.
And she writes RPF. I think I laughed forever at this episode.

I also love how the parents are still so very in love with each other. And the kids support each other and look up to their parents without any cheese.
It's so refreshing!

Exactly! Well said. That "erotic friend fiction" episode made me laugh and was actually used in a paper I wrote about participatory media culture.

I love that too! Bob and Linda love each other, they love their kids and their kids look up to them (though sometimes begrudgingly, in the case of Louise looking up to Bob). Even though things aren't perfect and they poke fun at each other occasionally, it's never malicious and it's clear they're a family that cares about one another. While still being hilarious. Topsy makes me laugh like nothing else.

I finally watched Bob's Burgers because so many people kept saying it was so funny. Awful. It was fucking awful. Thus proving yet again, different strokes for different folks.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, this.

So many people who like Venture Bros and Archer (which I like) love that show. I. Can't. STAND IT. Mostly because I'm not big on Kristen Schaal, but I think the humor is pretty meh, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I only watched it (once) because it was on while we were chilling at my partner's dad's house, and it's just...awkward. The only good thing I can really say about it from having only seen one episode is that at least it isn't offensive, but it is embarrassing to the point of being unwatchable.

Personally, I find that 9 times out of 10, when a show's only premise is "to be funny," I end up either offended or full of secondhand embarrassment. I think the only comedic show I still like anymore is Better Off Ted, but that got cancelled, so. The only things I watch largely for the humor value anymore are shows like Hell's Kitchen or Project Runway, where I can laugh at the contestants being bitchy, bitchy idiots.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
What's awful about it if I might ask?
The only thing I hate about it is the constant toilet humor. It gets a bit out of hand sometimes. But other than that? It's perfect to me *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I don't mind shows that are about low humour. Maybe I'd enjoy it if it wasn't like most of the shows now. But when 100% of them are and you can't find any smart humour that doesn't have to resort to shit to be funny...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Bob's Burgers is surprisingly good. (Surprisingly because I thought it would be Family Guy-esque and it's not.)
