Fandom Trends

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-05-26 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone mentioned yesterday that there was a trend in their fandom of characters smoking in fic.

I know that a month ago there was an odd trend in several of my fandoms of Fawn/Satyr AUs. I have no idea why (maybe Spring made everyone feel closer to nature), but it was odd.

What are some trends you have seen in your fandoms (past or present) that were either interesting or weird?

I feel like in both the fandoms I've been there has been a wide variety of fics right at the beginning, then there's a majority of really dark and angsty stuff, and after that it's AU time.

There has been a very short trend of Cyborg!Q and Android!Q in the 00Q fandom, and the ones I read were interesting.

Hmmm. I wonder if that has anything to do with the new Iron Man movie.

Dark and Angsty. Yeah those seem to happen cyclically in fandoms. SPN had a lot.

The cyborg/android thing? I don't think so, it happened months before IM3 was released. I think people just like sci-fi stuff, and it sort of fitted some of the themes in the movie. Or maybe one good writer wrote one and a lot of people enjoyed it and wanted to write their own story.

there definitely does seem to be a period in which most fics are "on topic" and them everything goes AU lol

Mating/mates/soulbonds. A/B/O. Both trends that have virtually taken over my fandoms. And I am not interested in them at all, but there is the kind of observer interest in the general trend.

A/B/O just cropped up one day and now it is EVERYWHERE.

I mean I'm not complaining, I started out on the "wtf is this" side and now I write it, but it IS weirdly pervasive.

I sometimes wonder about those people who write ~educational~ articles about fanfiction for magazines, if they ever actually go to AO3 and come across trends like self-lubricating assholes and just go "what the actual fuck" and then decide to leave that out of their report.

I started to notice more A/B/O in the Spn fandom about the same time my dash got into Teen Wolf, but I'm sure it was around before too.

I'm told A/B/O came out of SPN fandom; it started out as a bestiality fic (werewolf, iirc) and took off from there.

A/B/O keeps trying to rear it's head in my current fandom but I'm glad that it hasn't really taken off, got a few fics with that trend but otherwise it's easy to ignore.

Cannot wait til those two trends die.

I'm sure it's great for people who like that kind of stuff, but if you don't, it's annoying.
