I cannot begin to understand why anybody with any sense would care whether or not you know anything about the character (if you don't pretend to for imaginary cool points in the first place). If I cosplayed, there's characters I hardly like or know about who I'd dress up as simply because they're cool-looking black chicks, for pure aesthetics (because that's a big part of what cosplay IS), and I'll be goddamned if somebody would call me a fake nerd for it.

That said, research the character a bit solely so you can play her better; Ivy does have her own unique swagger, IMO. There's a difference between researching to fruitlessly try to prove something to territorial nerds, and researching to do a good performance.

apparently it's not about performance.

it's about looking good in the costume.
