Sort of off-topic: why are these specifically fake nerd GIRLS? Don't guys (particularly those who can be identified as "hipsters") also dress up in clothing that promotes fandoms they don't have the faintest clue about?

On-topic: If you don't want to play the game, you can always look up Let's Plays on Youtube.

I think because for guys being identified as a nerd is a bad thing with negative stereotypes (virgin, fat, covered in acne, etc).

Pretty much this. Definitely sexist.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Because OP is a girl. Why should OP be worried about identified as a fake nerd boy? There are distinct differences between the two stereotypes and only one would be applicable to OP.

Because, for the people who complain about them, nerdy is a guy thing, and specifically it's for socially maladjusted guys. It's kind of like finding out that your little brother with Down syndrome is dating someone who only likes him for his money: she's using him and he doesn't know any better.

They imagine that this is happening on a massive scale, mildly attractive women are going to conventions dressed seductively so as to attract the attention of lonely single virgins in order to make them think better of themselves, and those poor, lonely virgins need someone noble and attractive and much better at picking up ladies to come and protect them by shaming the fake geek girls.

Please, OP, don't listen to these jerks. Dress as you want and anyone who corners you with an in depth quiz on Poison Ivy's previous appearances should be promptly laughed at and ignored.

because the whole concept is entirely, 100% based on dudes not getting laid. that is the central matter at hand in almost all actually-existing debates around "fake nerd girls". it is nerdy guys complaining about girls who are interested in nerd culture but who do not want to have sex with aforementioned nerdy guys. that's the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fake Nerd Girl" was created by men who are sexually frustrated, and need an excuse/target for why they aren't getting as much sex as they wish/want.

If you want to cosplay, then go for it. You don't need any other reason than "I want to"

Just tell people "A friend of mine suggested that I dress up as her." They don't have to know who that friend is, and you'll be in a position to deflect any pop quizzes on comic book knowledge.

Alternately, if some guy starts getting in your face about whether or not you know enough about the character to be dressed up as her, just look him over, arch an eyebrow, ask "Really? Really? You're going to be that guy?" And walk the fuck away.

I really hate this "fake nerd girl" bullshit. If you like the character, you like the character, you don't have to be able to recite 120 facts about Poison Ivy or the Batman comics in general to somehow prove you have a right to like her. Anyone who calls you fake or gives you grief about cosplaying can just fuck right off. You don't have to take their shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
By this stage, dressing as Poison Ivy is a bit like dressing as Superman: she's as much a cultural icon as she is a character. There have been any number of versions of her: DCAU, Uma Thurman, the various comics, The Batman cartoon, the games, etc. She's more or less instantly recognisable, even if only as 'that red-haired sexy plant lady from Batman'.

So I'd say go for it. Say you like the idea of her as a character, and the version from the game had a costume and look you enjoyed, so you went for it. If that's not good enough, screw 'em.

Guess I'm going to be the voice of dissension here.

If you want to dress up like her, fine--but be honest about why. Don't lie about reading the comics, playing the games, etc, and get ready for any shit thrown your way.

As someone who dresses up as *this* version, and loves the games, I personally get pretty annoyed at people dressing up as things they have no real love/association for.

Cosplay is a way for me to show my love of a character/a series/etc--

---not to show my new found confidence off.

If you want to be sexy, find a character that you *like* who is sexy, and dress up like that.

Because yeah, you will be called a fake nerd if you are called out on it. And really, are you not? Any boy or girl who dresses up as a character they know nothing about, for the sake of gaining attention is faking it for *that* attention.

As long as you are okay with that, more power to you.

If you aren't, well, I suggest you go to the beach in a bikini.

I'm not going to get into the whole "fake geek girl" debate because I think the whole this is stupid and complex and fuck I am not doing it today.

Thing is though, I do want to give you advice on how to deal with the assholes there. I would advise not walking alone in that outfit because for some fucking reason a lot of people believe costume equals consent and there may be people who try to grope you/sexually harass you. I would also advise getting a butt guard and yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. People are going to try to take pictures of your butt without asking you first. So having a person walk behind you or using their bag to shield you is a good idea. In general, it's also nice to have a friend or two available to help stop unwanted advances or to just help you get out of situations.

I don't want to scare you off or anything and I know that sounds horrible and stupid after all I just said but, yeah. Conventions are fantastic places where you can have a great load of fun. They are also places where I have seen and experienced a lot of stuff that would not fly elsewhere. So... yeah. Good luck.

Fuck what people say, cosplay whatever you want.

A friend of mine cosplayed as Misa, even though she never watched/read Death Note. She nailed it, and no one ever knew.

I cannot begin to understand why anybody with any sense would care whether or not you know anything about the character (if you don't pretend to for imaginary cool points in the first place). If I cosplayed, there's characters I hardly like or know about who I'd dress up as simply because they're cool-looking black chicks, for pure aesthetics (because that's a big part of what cosplay IS), and I'll be goddamned if somebody would call me a fake nerd for it.

That said, research the character a bit solely so you can play her better; Ivy does have her own unique swagger, IMO. There's a difference between researching to fruitlessly try to prove something to territorial nerds, and researching to do a good performance.

The "fake fan" doing cosplay debate is very interesting.

I have friends who are very into cosplay. Their costumes are gorgeous and they spend a lot of time and money on props, wigs and contacts. They always cosplay characters they love because they mean something on a personal level.

My friends get very angry when "fake fans" cosplay as the characters they love because they are only doing it for the attention. They take a popular character, take sexy photos and get a lot of comments and praise because they are so pretty and lovely and kawaii.

On the one hand, I think cosplay is a hobby, and if you have fun dressing up, go for it, who cares if you are not a "true fan" of the character.

On the other hand, I understand why it´s disappointing when somebody cosplays a character you love just to get attention, especially from men.

Wear what you want, OP.

It's your body and your life, no one else's.

But, as other people upthread have said, please do be aware that there are some creepy people at cons, who will try to take photos of your boobs & but without your consent, or they may try to grope you/hug you/glomp you without asking.

So I'd advise going with a friend.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
so...in essence, going to a con dressed as a character you know nothing about just so you can show off your sexy body...

...I'm sorry. which part of that is about fandom and enjoying the fandom space which is what cons are about?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
screw the haters, do what you want

an easy way to give yourself some unspoken nerd cred would be to at least glance over some comic covers or media and get an idea of how she poses, maybe? if you're in-character with your attitude and your posture, they've really got nothing to complain about. you're having fun, not acting or writing a research paper on the character.
cure_light: (Default)

[personal profile] cure_light 2013-05-27 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I still think it's stupid people get all up in arms about the reasons people cosplay at cons. If someone who isn't that into football goes to a football game dressed up in the colors of one team and cheers for them, even thought they don't really know what's going on, are they a "fake fan"? Does it make any fucking difference to anybody?

Nerds are way too picky about who is and isn't allowed into our little clubs. At some point it just gets silly. Cosplaying as a character you don't know much about doesn't hurt anybody and it's a silly thing to complain about.
