I still think it's stupid people get all up in arms about the reasons people cosplay at cons. If someone who isn't that into football goes to a football game dressed up in the colors of one team and cheers for them, even thought they don't really know what's going on, are they a "fake fan"? Does it make any fucking difference to anybody?

Nerds are way too picky about who is and isn't allowed into our little clubs. At some point it just gets silly. Cosplaying as a character you don't know much about doesn't hurt anybody and it's a silly thing to complain about.

The criticism happens in sports, too. The term used is usually closer to "fucking bandwagoners" than "fake geek", though. (Please note this is not an endorsement of either term.)
