Attack on Titan
Agents of karma sent to punish people who come up with elaborate solutions to very simple problems.
Seriously, shooting ropes and cables out of your hips and flying around in the air when all you'd need to do is dig a big fucking hole in the ground? Really? Really? If you've got the technology to build a hundred and fifty foot wall, you've got the technology to dig a hundred and fifty foot hole. The reason humans built walls to keep out other humans is that humans build bridges over that shit; the giants don't build things. They walk around naked. Dig a big fucking hole.
No, it was a nice thought, but the holes you dug in the fourth episode were so small the giants could climb them and you left the bridge up to cross them even though there was more than enough time between the initial titan attack and the invasion to collapse it. C- for effort, but think bigger next time. Also, more initiative, less wasted time on emotional speeches to your childhood friends while your eyes quiver.
Now, when they fall into the hole, shooting them with cannons/ballista bolts/big sharp fucking rocks will be like shooting fish in a barrel. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T GO NEAR THEM! THAT WOULD BE SO UNBELIEVABLY FUCKING STU--- OH WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
Here's a shovel. You can have command of your city back when you've dug the hole (and found the other half of your jackets).

Re: Attack on Titan
I counted for a few episodes, and close to 80% of their casualties are due to being grabbed while flitting around on their cables, OH GOD PEOPLE GO FOR THE HANDS FIRST. THE SOLUTION IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. Yes, it is very difficult to close in on the neck of the enemy when their reach is longer than your body several times over, SO CUT OFF THEIR HANDS. One thing you learn in fencing is how much easier it is to hit someone's extremities than their core, which is why epee fighters who only need a touch anywhere on the body go for the feet or HANDS, but since the giants are unarmed, it wouldn't even be like going for the hands it would be like GOING FOR THE TIP OF THE GODDAMNED SWORD, WHICH IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO HIT. Yes, they regenerate in seconds, but those are CRUCIAL SECONDS DURING WHICH THEY CAN'T EAT YOU, SO YOU CAN GET TO THE BACK OF THEIR NECKS.
OOOOOOHHHH GOOOD WHY ARE THEY SO MIND-NUMBINGLY STUPID?!
DIG A FUCKING WHOLE IN THE GROUND.
I'm also so over the whole eye-quivering/torso jerking while shouting/bursting into tears every three seconds anime pastiche that I can't believe I ever liked it.
THAT SAID, IT'S BETTER THAN ALL THE ANIME I'VE WATCHED IN YEARS (barring Madoka) OH GOD WWWWHHHHYYYY.
Re: Attack on Titan
(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)While, yes, it could help to immobilize some titans, you can't just make all of them fall in a bunch of holes : they are too much for that and not all of them are dumb zombies.
Making a big pit would take a lot of space and what are they lacking inside the wall ? That's right, territory.
Of course, they could make a pit on the other side right ? Well yeah but there's titans there so good luck digging 15 meters holes because you're gonna need the silly steampunk machine to get out of here quickly when they come for you (little fact : at full speed, some Titans can outrun horses)
Besides, the 3D Gear was already in use before humans envisaged the possibility of titans invading the Walls. It was used in expeditions on the wild, where you didn't have time to laid traps.
It's a very good way to escape when you're attacked, because you can flew in all the directions instead of running on the ground where they can pick you up pretty easily.
It was also said in episode 5 that it's really hard to kill a titan with cannons because of their powers. The fact that they will probably face you when you shoot at them make it even more difficult to get their neck. On the other hand, the 3D-gear is a good way to get in their back.
Re: Attack on Titan
I already answered that above. Inertia carries them forward - this is just physics - and most fall on their faces, so shoot them in the back of the neck at the bottom of the hole, e.g. "like shooting fish in a barrel". It's already been established that massive trauma stuns them even if it doesn't kill them, so you'd also have a golden opportunity to hit a stationary target. Hell you could even hide soldiers with their Overcomplicated Anime Wires to slice them open while they're stunned, if you really must do things they hard way and can't figure out how to aim cannons.
they are too much for that and not all of them are dumb zombies.
What? A bunch of them fell into the stupidly ill-thought out hole they did dig. That's proof of priniciple right there. Even if it doesn't get all of them, thinning out their numbers would help dramatically in terms of damage containment inside the city.
Making a big pit would take a lot of space and what are they lacking inside the wall ? That's right, territory.
But they lost a third (well, actually, way more than a third but the artist/writer can't do basic geometry, apparently) of their territory without dying already. If they dig a hole even a fraction the size of the first territory, they'd be golden.
On the other hand, the 3D-gear is a good way to get in their back.
Not the way they actually use them, it isn't. See note below childings' re: How Sword-Fighting Actually Works, and Go For Their Hands First, You Morons.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)But they lost a third (well, actually, way more than a third but the artist/writer can't do basic geometry, apparently) of their territory without dying already. If they dig a hole even a fraction the size of the first territory, they'd be golden.
The reason they're still alive may have to do with the fact that they send a big part of their population outside on a mission so that they didn't have to feed them, as said in episode 2.
And they wouldn't be golden at all if the Titan broke the side on the opposite part of the wall than where they made the hole. They would have spent their time digging for nothing.
And yes, I totally agree that in episode 5, they didn't use it well but that was the point : they're rookies in a terible situation and their leader (the only one top student from their group) just let his anger get the best of him. So when they try to follow hastily, they fall appart.
Later, we actually see composed soldiers and/or experienced members of the army fighting smartly and laying traps for the Titans (but not holes because they don't exactly have the time to spend hours digging when you can use a net or cut parts of their feet with your weapons in order to make them trip)
